Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s dive into the delightful world of Spicy and Sweet Tteokbokki, a dish loved by the whole family!

Step 1

Step 2

First, pour 500ml of your flavorful broth into a pot. Add the star of our spicy sauce: 2 tablespoons of gochujang, 1 tablespoon of fine gochugaru for a rich flavor, 1 tablespoon of sugar for sweetness, 1 tablespoon of oligodang (or corn syrup), and 1 tablespoon of maesilcheong (plum extract) for a sweet and tangy note. Stir well with a spoon to dissolve any clumps, ensuring the sauce base is smooth and well-mixed.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, it’s time to prepare the rice cakes. We’re using both cheese-filled tteokbokki tteok and the traditional tteokbokki tteok with holes. To prevent them from sticking together and to ensure a clean sauce, lightly rinse the rice cakes under running water. Once rinsed, add them all into the pot with the prepared sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

Let’s get the fish cakes ready! Cut them into bite-sized pieces. Rectangular fish cakes can typically be cut into 2-3 sections. Also, prepare the scallions by cutting them into 3-4cm lengths for a fresh aroma. Add the cut fish cakes and scallions into the pot with the rice cakes. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the sauce to coat the rice cakes and fish cakes evenly.

Step 4

Step 5

The pièce de résistance for our tteokbokki! Fresh scallions add a wonderful aroma. In the final stage, generously add the plenty of chopped scallions. The fresh fragrance of the scallions will elevate the overall flavor of the tteokbokki. Simmer just a little longer until the scallions are slightly wilted.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, for an extra touch of nutty flavor and visual appeal, sprinkle some black sesame seeds on top. This optional step makes the dish even more inviting. (Optional)

Step 6

Step 7

And there you have it – a wonderfully spicy and sweet tteokbokki is ready! Doesn’t the steam rising from the pot make you want to dig in? Enjoy a delicious mealtime with your loved ones!
