Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread
  • 2 cans (85g each) of tuna
  • 3 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp mustard
  • 5 pieces of pickled chicken radish (or sweet radish pickles)
  • Cucumber, sliced
  • Tomato, sliced
  • 4 slices of onion
  • A little bit of lettuce
  • 1 slice of processed cheese
  • 2-3 Tbsp onion cream sauce
  • Whole grain mustard (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Thoroughly drain the oil from the canned tuna. It’s important to remove as much liquid as possible to prevent a soggy sandwich. You can use a spoon or your hands (wearing gloves is recommended) to squeeze out the excess oil until the tuna is quite dry and fluffy.

Step 1

Step 2

In a bowl, combine the drained tuna with mayonnaise, sugar, mustard, and a generous amount of black pepper. Mix well. This combination provides a delightful balance of tangy, sweet, and savory flavors with a subtle kick from the mustard.

Step 2

Step 3

Finely chop about 5 pieces of pickled chicken radish (or sweet radish pickles) and add them to the tuna mixture. Stir to combine. This adds a wonderful burst of flavor and texture that elevates the sandwich! If you don’t have pickled radish, you can use chopped dill pickles or omit this ingredient.

Step 3

Step 4

Thinly slice the tomato, cucumber, and onion. Don’t skip the onions; they add a crucial layer of sharpness and flavor to the tuna sandwich.

Step 4

Step 5

Gently press the sliced tomatoes between paper towels to absorb any excess moisture. Your fresh vegetable components are now ready to be assembled.

Step 5

Step 6

Spread a thin layer of whole grain mustard evenly on one slice of bread (optional, but it adds a sophisticated touch). Next, layer on a generous amount of lettuce. Drizzle a little mayonnaise over the lettuce; this adds richness and also acts as a binder for the ingredients.

Step 6

Step 7

Arrange the sliced onions, tomato, and cucumber on top of the lettuce. Spoon a generous portion of the prepared tuna salad over the vegetables. Finally, place a slice of processed cheese on top of the tuna.

Step 7

Step 8

Spread a good amount of onion cream sauce on the other slice of bread and place it on top to complete the sandwich! If you have whole grain mustard, you could use that instead of the onion cream sauce. Today, I used what I had on hand.

Step 8

Step 9

Look at how tall this sandwich is! I love making generously filled sandwiches when I have the ingredients.

Step 9

Step 10

Wrap the sandwich tightly in parchment paper or plastic wrap, then slice it into your desired serving size. Enjoy your hearty, homemade tuna sandwich!
