Easy Homemade Onigiri (Triangle Rice Balls)
Delicious Triangle Rice Balls: Tuna Mayo, Spam Kimchi, Spam Mayo, and Chicken Mayo
The beef and gochujang stir-fry onigiri I posted recently was delicious! Today, I’m sharing recipes for universally loved Tuna Mayo, Spam Mayo, Spam Kimchi, and Chicken Mayo triangle rice balls that you can easily make at home. They’re simple yet satisfying meals or perfect snacks!
Basic Ingredients- Cooked Rice: 2 bowls (warm)
- Seaweed Sheets: 4 sheets for onigiri
- Onigiri Mold
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s make the ‘Tuna Mayo’ filling. One 90g can of tuna will make enough filling for about 4 triangle rice balls.
Step 2
Drain the oil from the canned tuna thoroughly. Removing excess oil will make the filling less greasy and more delicious.
Step 3
To the drained tuna, add 3 Tbsp of mayonnaise and mix well. Ensure the tuna and mayonnaise are evenly combined.
Step 4
And there you have it – your delicious Tuna Mayo filling is ready! This amount is enough for 4 rice balls.
Step 5
Now, prepare your onigiri mold. Place about 2 Tbsp of warm rice at the bottom of the mold and flatten it.
Step 6
Spoon a generous amount of the prepared Tuna Mayo filling onto the rice. Don’t be shy with the filling; more makes it tastier!
Step 7
Cover the filling with another 2 Tbsp of warm rice and flatten it gently.
Step 8
Place the lid on the onigiri mold and press down firmly to shape the rice ball. Pressing firmly will help it hold its shape later.
Step 9
Carefully remove the shaped rice from the mold and place it onto a sheet of seaweed designed for onigiri. Gently press the rice to match the shape of the seaweed.
Step 10
Fold the remaining part of the seaweed over the rice to form the triangle shape, and use the sticker to secure it in place.
Step 11
Voila! Your appetizing Tuna Mayo triangle rice ball is complete! You’ll find making onigiri isn’t difficult after a few tries. Now, let’s move on to making other fillings.
Step 12
Making the ‘Spam Kimchi’ filling! First, finely chop the kimchi into bite-sized pieces.
Step 13
Cut the Spam into bite-sized pieces and lightly pan-fry it until golden brown. Fried Spam adds wonderful flavor. For the chopped kimchi, stir-fry it lightly in a pan with a little sesame oil until softened. You don’t need to overcook it.
Step 14
Place about 2 Tbsp of warm rice into the onigiri mold.
Step 15
Arrange the golden-brown fried Spam pieces nicely on top of the rice.
Step 16
Add about 1 Tbsp of the stir-fried kimchi, and finish by topping with another 2 Tbsp of rice, flattening it gently.
Step 17
Shape the rice using the mold, then place it on the seaweed, press to fit the seaweed’s shape, and secure with the sticker to complete the Spam Kimchi onigiri!
Step 18
Making ‘Spam Mayo’ onigiri! Place 2 Tbsp of warm rice in the mold, and then generously fill it with fried Spam. Packing the Spam in tightly makes it extra delicious! Haha.
Step 19
Drizzle about 1.5 Tbsp of mayonnaise over the Spam. Your Spam Mayo filling is now ready – simple, right?
Step 20
Making ‘Chicken Mayo’ onigiri! Leftover chicken or chicken breast works well here. First, shred the meat from the chicken.
Step 21
Finely chop the shredded chicken meat into small, bite-sized pieces. Avoid making them too large.
Step 22
Place 2 Tbsp of warm rice in the onigiri mold, and then add the finely chopped chicken meat on top.
Step 23
Drizzle about 1.5 Tbsp of mayonnaise over the chicken.
Step 24
Finally, cover with another 2 Tbsp of rice and flatten gently.
Step 25
Cover the mold with its lid and press down firmly to shape the rice ball.
Step 26
Transfer the shaped rice onto the seaweed sheet. Gently press the rice to fit the triangular shape of the seaweed.
Step 27
Fold the other side of the seaweed over to complete the triangle shape, and use the sticker to hold it all together.
Step 28
And there you have it – four kinds of delicious triangle rice balls! You can also use other fillings like stir-fried beef with gochujang, spicy pork stir-fry, or braised meat. For more filling ideas, check out my previous posts!
