  • 1/2 bowl of cooked rice (approx. 100g)
  • A little cooking oil

Sweet and Spicy Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 3 Tbsp maesilcheong (Korean plum syrup)
  • 3 Tbsp water

Rice Seasoning

  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of fine salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s start by making the delicious sauce for the sausage flowers. In a small pan, combine 1 Tbsp ketchup, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 Tbsp gochujang, 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 3 Tbsp maesilcheong, and 3 Tbsp water. Stir well. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low heat and cook for about 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly with a spatula until the sauce thickens to a glaze. Be careful not to let the sauce burn. You can prepare this sauce a day in advance; it will thicken further as it cools.

Step 1

Step 2

Now it’s time to shape the sausages into beautiful flowers! You’ll need a knife or scissors for this. First, cut each Vienna sausage lengthwise in half, but not all the way through to the end. Then, trim any sharp, pointed ends with scissors to create a more rounded shape.

Step 2

Step 3

Next, let’s create the ‘petals’ for our sausage flowers. Make deep cross-shaped cuts at the pointed end of each sausage half. Then, make additional cross-shaped cuts between these initial cuts. This will allow the sausage to open up into 8 ‘petals’ when cooked. Ensure the cuts are deep enough for the shape to bloom nicely.

Step 3

Step 4

Lightly oil a pan and place the prepared sausages in it. Cook over medium heat until the shapes unfurl into beautiful flower blooms. Flip them occasionally to ensure they cook evenly and turn a nice golden brown.

Step 4

Step 5

Once cooked, transfer the sausages to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. This step helps to remove greasiness for a more pleasant taste.

Step 5

Step 6

Time to season the rice! In a bowl, combine 1/2 bowl of warm cooked rice with 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil and a pinch of fine salt. Gently mix and knead the rice with your hands until well combined. Form the rice into a compact ball, then flatten it slightly into a disc shape.

Step 6

Step 7

Now, place a sausage flower on top of the flattened rice. Carefully wrap the rice around the sausage, pressing gently to secure it. Shape the rice to cradle the sausage flower beautifully, making it look like a flower blooming on a bed of rice.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, spoon the prepared sweet and spicy sauce over the sausage flowers. Using the tip of a chopstick, gently spread the sauce onto the ‘petals’ of each sausage flower for an appealing finish. Don’t overload it; a light glaze is best.

Step 8

Step 9

And there you have it – your beautifully crafted Sausage Flower Rice is complete! This visually appealing and tasty dish is sure to make breakfast time more enjoyable for children. Serve it on a nice plate for a delightful presentation.
