Savory Soy Sauce Braised Fish Cakes (Non-Spicy)
Golden Recipe for Non-Spicy Soy Sauce Braised Fish Cakes: Quick & Easy Home-Style Dish with Green Peppers, Ready in 10 Minutes!
I’m thrilled to share an incredibly simple home-style side dish recipe that’s perfect for children and the entire family: non-spicy soy sauce braised fish cakes with green peppers. The chewy texture combined with a sweet and savory flavor profile makes it a universally loved dish, which is why braised fish cakes frequently appear on our dining table! It’s one of those staple side dishes I often make after the weekend when I find myself running low on options. I personally used 5 sheets of thin square fish cakes, but this golden recipe is also perfectly scaled for 4 sheets of regular square fish cakes.
The secret to its deliciousness lies in the perfectly balanced sauce, made with soy sauce and corn syrup (oligo당). Fish cakes contain flour, so they can become mushy if overcooked or cooked with water. Therefore, the key to keeping them chewy and firm is to sauté them generously with olive oil instead of water. Adding thinly sliced onions and fragrant green peppers during the sauté process further enhances the aroma and depth of flavor. Since all the ingredients are cooked together at once, this recipe is a quick 10-minute wonder! It’s ideal as a delicious make-ahead side dish to start your week.
Let’s get cooking!
Ingredients- 4 sheets thin square fish cakes (approx. 160g)
- 1/4 onion
- 1-2 green peppers
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp corn syrup (oligo당)
- 1.5 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 4 sheets of fish cakes. If using frozen fish cakes, a quick rinse under running water will thaw them instantly. Slice the fish cakes lengthwise into strips about 1 cm wide. Thinly slice the onion into approximately 0.4 cm thick strips. For the green peppers, cut them in half lengthwise, remove the seeds, and then slice them into long, thin strips. Having all your ingredients prepped makes the stir-frying process much smoother.
Step 2
Before turning on the heat, place the sliced fish cakes, onion, and green peppers into the pan. Next, add all the sauce ingredients: 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce, and 2 Tbsp corn syrup for sweetness.
Step 3
As you can see in the photo, once all the sauce ingredients, vegetables, and fish cakes are gathered in the pan, you’re ready to start cooking and bring this delicious dish to life!
Step 4
With all the ingredients in the pan, turn the heat to medium-high. Gently stir-fry the fish cakes and vegetables, ensuring they are well coated with the sauce. Medium-high heat is ideal for cooking evenly without burning the ingredients.
Step 5
Continue to stir-fry until the sauce is well combined with the ingredients and the onions are cooked to a tender-crisp texture. It’s important not to overcook, as the fish cakes can become mushy. Stir-frying for about 3-4 minutes usually does the trick.
Step 6
You’ll notice the fish cakes are beautifully coated with the olive oil and soy sauce mixture, looking glossy and appetizing. Once the soy sauce flavor has beautifully infused, add 1.5 Tbsp of sesame oil and give it a quick toss to enhance the aroma.
Step 7
After adding the sesame oil and stir-frying briefly, turn off the heat immediately. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds over the dish for added nutty flavor and a visually appealing finish.
Step 8
Transfer the deliciously prepared non-spicy soy sauce braised fish cakes to a serving plate. Sprinkle a little more toasted sesame seeds on top and garnish with the julienned green peppers. This makes for a visually appealing and incredibly tasty dish that both children and adults will love. Enjoy making it!
