Ingredients

  • 1 can (400g) whole peeled tomatoes
  • 100g spaghetti
  • 600ml water
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 20g butter
  • 5 cloves garlic
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Pinch of Italian herb mix
  • 1 tsp chicken stock
  • 1/4 onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 1 can of whole peeled tomatoes. You can use any brand, but note that the level of acidity can vary between products. Adjust the sugar amount to your preference when seasoning.

Step 1

Step 2

Thinly slice the 5 cloves of garlic into slivers.

Step 2

Step 3

Thinly slice 1/4 onion into strips.

Step 3

Step 4

Heat a little olive oil (not included in ingredient list) in a wide pan. Lightly sauté the sliced garlic and onions until fragrant over low heat. Be careful not to burn them; you want to extract their gentle aroma.

Step 4

Step 5

Pour the entire can of whole peeled tomatoes into the pan with the sautéed garlic and onions. Add 1.5 cans of water (approximately 600ml). Trim the tough stem ends from the tomatoes with scissors and roughly chop the tomatoes.

Step 5

Step 6

Add 1 Tbsp soy sauce and 1 Tbsp sugar. (Tip: I added 1 tsp of chicken stock, so I reduced the salt to 1 tsp. Start with 1 tsp of salt for general seasoning, and adjust to taste.)

Step 6

Step 7

Now, add 100g of spaghetti and 20g of butter to the pan. Cook over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is cooked and the sauce has thickened. Ensure the pasta is submerged in the sauce.

Step 7

Step 8

After about 10 minutes, the pasta should be perfectly cooked, and the sauce will have reduced to a thick, luscious consistency.

Step 8

Step 9

Finally, sprinkle in a pinch of black pepper and some Italian herb mix. (Tip: I like a thicker sauce, so I reduced the liquid further over medium-high heat. Feel free to adjust the sauce consistency to your liking.) Give everything a good stir, and your delicious whole tomato one-pan pasta is ready!
