Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The SoTteok SoTteok found at Anseong Service Area typically uses small, plump Vienna sausages and tteokbokki rice cakes, which helps the sauce to adhere better. However, you can make equally delicious SoTteok SoTteok using the garaetteok (cylindrical rice cakes) you have at home.
Step 2
First, cut the garaetteok into pieces similar in size to tteokbokki rice cakes, about 3-4 cm long. Cut the sausages into segments of about 2-3 cm, matching the length of the rice cakes. Once prepared, thread these pieces onto skewers. Lightly oil a frying pan and pan-fry the rice cakes and sausages until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. If you’re making a simple late-night snack, you can use just a little oil. If you plan to fry a larger batch at once, you can thread them onto skewers first and then fry them in a pan with plenty of oil or a deep fryer.
Step 3
Now, alternately thread the pan-fried rice cakes and sausages onto the skewers. You can use tteokbokki rice cakes instead of garaetteok if you prefer; the chewy texture of the rice cakes combined with the springy sausages creates an even more delightful taste. Feel free to use whatever ingredients you have on hand.
Step 4
Once the SoTteok SoTteok is neatly arranged on the skewers, generously drizzle your desired sauces over the top. Don’t be shy with the sauce – more sauce means more flavor!
Step 5
Lee Young-ja personally recommended chili sauce as particularly delicious, and I agree that the sweet and spicy flavor of chili sauce pairs wonderfully with SoTteok SoTteok. The Anseong Service Area style involves generously applying ketchup and taking bites of rice cake and sausage horizontally, alternating between them. This method allows you to savor the balanced flavors of both the rice cake and the sausage in each bite.
