Crispy and Savory Homemade Gim-jaban (Seasoned Laver Flakes)
Super Easy Recipe for Making Delicious Gim-jaban (Laver Flakes) – A Freezer Staple!
I’ve made the ultimate side dish, Gim-jaban, using GOBCHANG-GIM (a type of laver) that I always keep stocked in my freezer! This is an essential ingredient for making rice balls and kimbap! Let’s make delicious Gim-jaban. It’s perfect as a snack for kids or a side dish for adults!
Basic Ingredients- 4 sheets of GOBCHANG-GIM or plain laver
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the 4 sheets of laver. Trim the edges of the laver sheets, then cut them into roughly 8 pieces each and crumble them into small, bite-sized pieces. Cutting them very finely with scissors is especially good for children.
Step 2
Now, heat a frying pan over low heat. Add the cut laver and 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to the pan.
Step 3
Spread the laver evenly in the pan to prevent it from burning, then drizzle in 2 tablespoons of sesame oil. The nutty aroma of sesame oil will blend beautifully with the laver, enhancing its flavor.
Step 4
Gently use your hands to mix the laver with the cooking oil and sesame oil until they are evenly coated. Coating the laver with oil will prevent it from burning while cooking and give it a savory taste.
Step 5
Now, continue to stir-fry the laver over low heat. Stir gently to prevent the laver from breaking apart as you fry it.
Step 6
Once the laver turns a greenish color and starts to become crispy, immediately turn off the heat. Be careful, as the hot pan will continue to cook the laver. With the heat off, prepare 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Step 7
Finally, add 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds and mix well while the Gim-jaban is still warm. Adding sesame seeds and mixing lightly will double the savory flavor.
Step 8
