For the French Toast

  • 6 slices of baguette
  • 2 fresh eggs
  • 50ml milk
  • 1 pinch of salt (to balance the flavors)
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • 20g butter
  • 1/3 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

A little heads-up before we start! Don’t worry if you don’t have powdered sugar or vanilla extract. For a wonderful flavor boost instead of powdered sugar, you can mix cinnamon with regular sugar and sprinkle it on top. Vanilla extract helps to eliminate any eggy smell and enhances the flavor, giving it that café-style taste. If you don’t have it, simply add a little extra sugar to the egg mixture. You can still achieve a delicious brunch without these ingredients, so don’t stress! ^^

Step 1

Step 2

Prepare a wide, shallow dish. Crack the 2 fresh eggs into it. A wider dish makes it much easier to coat the baguette slices evenly and thoroughly with the egg mixture.

Step 2

Step 3

Pour 50ml of milk into the eggs. If you have heavy cream on hand, I highly recommend using that instead of milk. Using heavy cream will make your French toast even richer and incredibly fluffy and moist.

Step 3

Step 4

Add about 2-3 drops of fragrant vanilla extract to the mixture. If you don’t have vanilla extract, you can substitute it with 1 teaspoon of sugar. I used vanilla extract today, so I didn’t add extra sugar.

Step 4

Step 5

Add a tiny pinch of salt to the egg mixture. This small amount helps to enhance the overall sweetness and balance the flavors.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, grab a fork and whisk everything together until well combined. Ensure there are no streaks of egg yolk or white, and that it’s smooth.

Step 6

Step 7

While the egg mixture is ready, melt 20g of butter in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Be careful not to let the butter burn; you want it to melt gently.

Step 7

Step 8

While the butter is melting, dip the baguette slices into the prepared egg mixture.

Step 8

Step 9

Let the bread soak in the egg mixture for a sufficient amount of time, turning to coat both sides. This ensures that the custard soaks all the way through, making the toast incredibly moist and tender. For an extra-fluffy texture, let it soak for even longer.

Step 9

Step 10

Carefully place the egg-soaked baguette slices into the preheated frying pan with the melted butter. Cook over medium heat. It’s important to cook it for a decent amount of time to ensure the egg mixture cooks through completely and the bread develops a lovely golden-brown crust.

Step 10

Step 11

Once the bread starts to turn golden brown, sprinkle a little sugar evenly over both sides. Reduce the heat to low. This prevents the sugar from burning and allows it to caramelize beautifully.

Step 11

Step 12

As the sugar hits the hot pan, you’ll hear a gentle sizzle. The sugar will melt and caramelize, coating the bread in a beautiful, glossy brown finish. That ‘sizzle’ is the sound of deliciousness! ^^ Try not to flip the bread too often; letting it cook undisturbed on each side will ensure perfect caramelization.

Step 12

Step 13

Once the surfaces are a beautiful golden brown, your French toast is ready! Transfer it to a warm plate. For a lovely finish, lightly dust with powdered sugar. If you don’t have powdered sugar, a sprinkle of the cinnamon-sugar mix mentioned earlier is also a fantastic option. I’ll use powdered sugar today.

Step 13

Step 14

With the powdered sugar dusted on top, your perfect homemade French toast is complete! It’s not as difficult as it might seem, so enjoy your delicious creation.
