Steamed Snap Peas with Savory Seasoning
These steamed snap peas (Ggwari Gochu) are a delightful dish, known for their mild flavor that even children can enjoy. Fresh snap peas are coated in a light layer of flour, steamed until tender, and then tossed in a flavorful savory sauce. This recipe is simple yet results in a truly satisfying side dish that pairs perfectly with rice.
Main Ingredients- 1 pack fresh snap peas (Ggwari Gochu, approx. 200g)
- 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour for a healthier option)
Seasoning Sauce Ingredients- 1 Tbsp Korean soup soy sauce (Guk-ganjang or Jin-ganjang)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (Gochugaru)
- Pinch of toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)
- 1 Tbsp Korean soup soy sauce (Guk-ganjang or Jin-ganjang)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (Gochugaru)
- Pinch of toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by washing the snap peas thoroughly under running water. Gently snip off the stems. This helps to reduce any bitterness. Pat the washed peas dry, and place them into a disposable plastic bag for easy coating.
Step 2
Add the 2 tablespoons of flour to the bag with the snap peas. Seal the bag securely and shake it well, so that the peas are evenly coated with a light layer of flour. You’ll have your flour-dusted peas ready for steaming.
Step 3
Prepare your steamer by bringing water to a boil. Once steam is rising, arrange the flour-coated snap peas in a single layer on the steamer basket. Cover with the lid and steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until the raw flour taste disappears and the peas are tender. The exact steaming time may vary depending on the thickness of the peas.
Step 4
Be careful not to overcook the snap peas, as they can become mushy. They are ready when the flour coating turns translucent and the peas themselves change from a vibrant green to a slightly yellowish hue. Remove them from the steamer promptly.
Step 5
In a small bowl, whisk together the Korean soup soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes to create the savory seasoning sauce. If you prefer a touch of sweetness, you can add a tiny amount of sugar or corn syrup.
Step 6
Transfer the freshly steamed snap peas to a larger bowl. Pour the prepared seasoning sauce over the peas. Gently toss everything together to ensure the sauce coats the peas evenly, being careful not to break them.
Step 7
Finally, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for a beautiful garnish and an extra layer of nutty flavor. Your delicious and mild steamed snap peas are now ready to be served! They make an excellent accompaniment to warm rice. For a spicier kick, you can finely chop a fresh chili pepper and add it to the sauce.
