Easy Way to Boil Sweet Corn: Steaming Corn in a Pot with Sugar and Storage Tips
Remember the sweet corn your mom used to steam for you? Now you can easily make it at home! It’s a nutritious snack perfect for kids. I’ll show you the special secret to steaming chewy sweet corn perfectly. Anyone can follow along with just a pot!
Essential Ingredients- 10 ears of glutinous sweet corn
- 2 liters (L) of water
- 3 tablespoons coarse salt
- 1.5 tablespoons ‘New Sugar’ (a type of sweetener)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 10 ears of fresh glutinous sweet corn. Choosing corn with fresh husks and plump kernels is key to deliciousness.
Step 2
When peeling the corn, gently pull down the silk to clean it, then remove the outer husks, leaving just one layer of the inner husk. This remaining inner husk helps retain the corn’s moisture, ensuring a chewy texture after steaming.
Step 3
Lightly rinse the prepared corn under running water to remove any dirt or debris. Be careful not to wash too long, as it might wash away some of the natural sweetness.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the flavor-enhancing liquid. In one paper cup of water (about 180-200ml), add 3 tablespoons of coarse salt and 1.5 tablespoons of ‘New Sugar’. Stir well until both the salt and ‘New Sugar’ are completely dissolved. ‘New Sugar’ enhances the corn’s natural sweetness.
Step 5
Place the prepared glutinous corn ears snugly into a large pot. It’s best not to pack the pot too tightly to allow for even steaming.
Step 6
Pour in 2 liters of clean water and the dissolved salt and ‘New Sugar’ mixture. The water should be enough to mostly cover the corn.
Step 7
Now it’s time to steam the corn to perfection! Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and steam for 20 minutes. Then, continue to steam over medium-low heat for another 15 minutes, allowing it to steam gently. This is a total steaming time of about 35 minutes. Try not to open the lid frequently during the steaming process.
Step 8
Once the corn is perfectly steamed, remove it from the pot and let it cool slightly before enjoying. While delicious when hot, letting it cool a bit will enhance its chewy texture. Leftover corn can be refrigerated and enjoyed later!
