Savory Stir-Fried Oyster Mushrooms
How to Make Stir-Fried Oyster Mushrooms: A Simple Mushroom Stir-Fry Recipe
As a household of two, I try to make side dishes in small portions daily rather than large batches, though choosing which banchan to prepare is often the most challenging part. I find myself frequently making the side dishes we enjoy the most. This recipe for stir-fried oyster mushrooms is a flavorful and quick addition to any meal.
Main Ingredients- Oyster mushrooms, cleaned and trimmed (152g)
- Carrot (36g)
- Onion (57g)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the oyster mushrooms. Trim off any dirty ends from the base of the mushroom bunch. Gently separate the mushrooms into individual pieces. If any mushrooms are particularly thick, you can slice them in half lengthwise or further separate them into bite-sized pieces. This ensures even cooking and better absorption of flavors.
Step 2
Next, julienne the carrot and onion into approximately 3-4mm thick strips. Chop the green onions finely. Have your minced garlic ready (0.5 Tbsp). Cutting the vegetables to a similar size will help them cook at the same rate, leading to a more balanced dish.
Step 3
Now, let’s start stir-frying. Add the prepared oyster mushrooms, julienned carrots, and onions to a wide skillet or wok.
Step 4
Drizzle 3 tablespoons of olive oil over the ingredients. Olive oil adds a lovely subtle flavor that complements the mushrooms beautifully.
Step 5
Add 2 tablespoons of water to the pan. This helps to create steam and keep the mushrooms tender as they cook, preventing them from drying out.
Step 6
Sprinkle in about 2 pinches of salt to begin seasoning. Place the pan over medium heat on your stovetop. Cooking over medium heat allows the ingredients to cook through and develop flavor without burning.
Step 7
Once the pan is heated and you hear a gentle sizzle, stir the ingredients frequently. Continue to stir-fry until the mushrooms soften and wilt down, and the vegetables are tender-crisp, which should take about 3-5 minutes. Be careful not to overcook, as the mushrooms can become mushy.
Step 8
Add 0.8 to 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce. Stir well to coat all the ingredients evenly. The amount of oyster sauce can be adjusted based on your preference for saltiness and umami.
Step 9
Taste the stir-fry. If it needs more salt, add a tiny pinch more and stir again. It’s always best to adjust the seasoning gradually to achieve your desired flavor profile.
Step 10
Just before turning off the heat, add the chopped green onions and minced garlic. Stir-fry for another 30 seconds to release their aroma. Adding garlic towards the end prevents it from becoming bitter.
Step 11
Turn off the heat. Sprinkle a pinch of pepper over the stir-fry. Give it a final gentle toss to distribute the pepper evenly. This adds a subtle warmth and depth of flavor.
Step 12
Finally, garnish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Your delicious stir-fried oyster mushrooms are now ready to be enjoyed! Serve hot with rice for a comforting and satisfying meal.
