Healthy Tofu Steak Recipe Loved by Kids

Tofu Steak Ingredients- 300g Tofu (about 1 block)
- 30g Carrot (about 1/5 medium carrot)
- 30g Broccoli (about 1/5 head)
- 60g Breadcrumbs (from 2 slices of bread or 2 small buns)
- 140g Onion (about 1/2 medium onion)
- 2 Button Mushrooms
- 2 Fresh Shiitake Mushrooms
Savory Soy Sauce Glaze- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 2 Tbsp Mirin (or Sake)
- 5 Tbsp Water
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 2 Tbsp Mirin (or Sake)
- 5 Tbsp Water
- 1 tsp Sugar
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare all the ingredients for the tofu steak. Tip: Instead of store-bought breadcrumbs, using bread or small buns that you’ve ground yourself will result in a more flavorful and tender steak.
Step 2
We’ve prepared button mushrooms and fresh shiitake mushrooms. If you use dried shiitake mushrooms, they will add an even richer flavor.
Step 3
If you’re making this for young children, it’s best to use tofu made from domestically sourced soybeans for peace of mind.
Step 4
Removing excess water from the tofu is crucial. Wrap the tofu in paper towels and gently press it with a heavy object to squeeze out as much moisture as possible. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
Step 5
Once the water is pressed out, crumble the tofu using the side of a knife or mash it with a fork until it’s smooth and free of large lumps.
Step 6
Wrap the crumbled tofu in fresh paper towels and press again to remove any remaining moisture. Transfer the tofu to a clean bowl. This step ensures your steak mixture won’t be too wet and will hold its shape well.

Finely mince the onion. The sweetness from the onion will enhance the steak’s flavor.
Step 8
Blanch the broccoli in boiling salted water for only about 30 seconds. Avoid overcooking, as it can dull the color. This quick blanching retains its crispness and vibrant green hue.

Finely mince the blanched broccoli and carrot. Minced vegetables blend better into the tofu mixture, contributing to a smoother texture.

If you’re using bread or small buns, process them into fine breadcrumbs. I used small buns that I had on hand.

Now, let’s make the tofu steak mixture. In the bowl with the drained tofu, add the minced onion, minced carrot, minced broccoli, 1 egg, and the prepared breadcrumbs.
Step 12
To season, add a little minced garlic and a pinch of salt. Mix everything together thoroughly with your hands. It’s important to season lightly at this stage.
Step 13
Divide the mixture into three portions. Shape each portion into a thick steak by pressing it between your palms. Gently press down in the center to prevent it from puffing up too much while cooking.
Step 14
While the steaks are cooking, prepare a mushroom and onion topping. Slice the button mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and 100g of the onion.
Step 15
In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients for the soy sauce glaze (1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp oyster sauce, 2 Tbsp mirin, 5 Tbsp water, 1 tsp sugar) and mix well. Set aside.

Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and onion and sauté until fragrant.
Step 17
Once the mushrooms and onion are softened, pour in the prepared soy sauce glaze. Let it simmer until slightly thickened. Turn off the heat and drizzle in 1 tsp of sesame oil for a nutty aroma.
Step 18
Now it’s time to cook the tofu steaks. Heat oil in a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Place the shaped tofu steaks in the pan and sear until golden brown on both sides. Once browned, carefully stand the steaks on their sides and cook all around to ensure even cooking.

To serve, arrange the sautéed mushrooms and onions on a plate. Place the cooked tofu steak on top. Spoon some of the mushroom sauce over the steak and garnish with fresh greens or your favorite fruit for a beautiful presentation. Enjoy your delicious meal!
