Last night, I craved some fresh live octopus, so I ordered directly from someone who catches them in Mokpo. They were delivered the same day, and I decided to make ‘Nakji Tangtang-i’! It felt quite miraculous to enjoy live octopus tartare at home. The texture was incredibly fresh, chewy, and firm – truly a delight. Main Ingredients

  • 2 live octopuses (cleaned)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • Salt to taste

Chogochujang Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds

Receive the live octopus, which was freshly caught in Mokpo and delivered on the same day. I requested it be prepared for ‘Nakji Tangtang-i’, so it arrived cleaned and ready. Seeing the lively, fresh octopus already makes my mouth water.

Using the back of a knife, gently but quickly chop the tentacles of the cleaned live octopus. Make sure to make a ‘tang-tang-tang’ sound as you chop, cutting it into small, bite-sized pieces. It’s important not to chop it too finely, so the chewy texture of the octopus is preserved. The chopping sound is almost like music!

Transfer the finely chopped octopus to a serving plate. Your vibrant Nakji Tangtang-i is ready, looking as if it’s still wriggling with freshness! Doesn’t its sheer freshness make your mouth water?
