Braised Pork Belly Dish from Leftover Boiled Pork
Pantry Raid! Delicious Braised Pork Belly Made from Leftover Boiled Pork
After the children have flown the nest and it’s just the two of us, we don’t eat as much. So, I often put leftovers in the freezer. Today, I decided to take out some leftover boiled pork and braise it into a delicious dish.
Ingredients- 250g leftover boiled pork belly (thawed)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 1 red chili pepper
- 2 green chili peppers (e.g., Cheongyang)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 2 Tbsp mirin (or cooking wine)
- 2 Tbsp plum extract (or syrup)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic (or 2-3 cloves garlic, sliced)
- A little cooking oil
- A little sesame oil
- A little toasted sesame seeds
- A pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, ensure the leftover boiled pork belly, if frozen, is completely thawed. Thinly slice the onion. Deseed the red and green chili peppers and slice them diagonally. Adjust the amount of green chili peppers if you prefer a spicier taste.
Step 2
Heat a little cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic (or sliced garlic) and sauté until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. This step creates a flavorful garlic oil base. Add the thawed pork belly slices and sear them over high heat until lightly golden brown on all sides.
Step 3
Now, let’s add the flavor. Pour in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, mirin (or cooking wine), and plum extract into the pan. Stir well to combine. Add the prepared sliced onion and chili peppers. Stir-fry everything together for about 2-3 minutes until the vegetables soften slightly and the pork belly absorbs the sauce.
Step 4
Finally, add the sesame oil for aroma, toasted sesame seeds for texture and nutty flavor, and a pinch of black pepper. Toss gently to mix everything together. Adding sesame oil and pepper at the end preserves their fragrance.
Step 5
Transfer the beautifully braised pork belly to a serving dish. Sprinkle generously with extra toasted sesame seeds for a final touch.
Step 6
Voilà! Here is the appetizingly finished braised pork belly dish.
Step 7
Care for a bite? Even if your boiled pork belly feels a bit dry, braising it with vegetables like this transforms it into a moist and deeply flavorful dish. This recipe is a fantastic way to create a delicious side dish or even a main course without needing special ingredients. I hope this recipe proves helpful for your cooking endeavors!
