Cooking Instructions
Step 1
To start this delicious braised dish, first wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly. Peel them and then cut them into bite-sized cubes. Rinse the cut sweet potatoes under cold water to remove excess starch; this will make the braise cleaner and tastier. Place the cubed sweet potatoes into a pot, add the soy sauce, corn syrup, and cooking oil, and mix well.
Step 2
Add just enough water to barely cover the ingredients. Sweet potatoes tend to get mushy more easily than potatoes, so be careful not to add too much water. Adjusting the water amount is a key point for achieving the perfect braising liquid consistency.
Step 3
Cover the pot with a lid and simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes. During this time, the sweet potatoes will begin to soften. Check occasionally to ensure they don’t stick to the bottom of the pot.
Step 4
Once the sweet potatoes are somewhat tender, remove the lid. Sprinkle the ground beef evenly over the sweet potatoes. Gently loosen any clumps of beef as you add it.
Step 5
Continue to cook for about 5 more minutes after adding the beef. In this time, the beef will cook nicely and meld with the sweet potatoes to create a harmonious flavor. The sauce will start to reduce.
Step 6
Now it’s time to let it simmer and absorb all the delicious flavors and color. Keep the lid off and cook over medium-low heat. Gently stir the mixture as if you’re handling something precious, to prevent the sweet potatoes and beef from breaking apart. Continue to simmer until the sauce has thickened and coats the ingredients beautifully, achieving a glossy finish. Simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated and the seasoning clings to the ingredients.
Step 7
Finally, sprinkle a generous amount of toasted sesame seeds over the top to finish. The nutty flavor of the sesame seeds will enhance the overall taste. Serve over warm rice and enjoy!
