Caramel Popcorn Toast
Making Caramel Popcorn Toast from Bread
A delightful treat for kids who love caramel popcorn! I made caramel toast using bread that was turning into a rock in the freezer. It’s a fun way to repurpose leftover bread into a sweet, crunchy snack.
Ingredients- 3-4 slices of bread
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 6 Tbsp milk
Sauce- 5 Tbsp sugar
- 4 Tbsp water
- 5 Tbsp sugar
- 4 Tbsp water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the bread into small pieces, about 2-3 cm cubes. Heat a dry pan over medium-low heat. Add the bread cubes and toast them until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides. Be careful not to burn them, ensuring they get an even color.
Step 2
Now, let’s make the delicious caramel sauce. In a pan, combine the sugar (5 Tbsp) and water (4 Tbsp). Place it over medium-low heat. Crucially, do not stir the mixture; let it melt and bubble naturally, allowing the sugar to change color on its own. This prevents the caramel from burning and ensures a beautiful amber hue.
Step 3
As the caramel sauce starts to turn brown around the edges, add 1 Tbsp of butter. Allow the butter to melt and incorporate into the caramel for a moment.
Step 4
Once the edges of the sauce begin to turn a nice brown color, slowly and gradually pour in the warm milk (6 Tbsp). It’s important to add the milk in batches rather than all at once. Adding all the milk at once can cause the caramel to seize up or splatter vigorously.
Step 5
After adding the milk, quickly stir everything together with a whisk or spatula until the caramel sauce becomes smooth. Once the sauce is ready, turn off the heat. Add the pre-toasted bread pieces and toss them quickly to coat them evenly with the sauce. Stirring too much can make the bread soggy, so work fast!
Step 6
Line a tray with parchment paper. Carefully place the sauce-coated bread pieces onto the parchment paper, ensuring they are separated. Let them sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow the caramel to cool slightly and harden, making the outside extra crispy. Avoid letting them cool completely; a slight hardening enhances the texture.
Step 7
Enjoy the caramel popcorn toast as is, or for an extra treat, serve it with melted cheese or a chocolate fondue dip. It’s a delightful way to create a fun snack time with your family!
