Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice cakes for tteokbokki
  • 1 cup fish cakes, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Hard-boiled eggs (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under running water a couple of times. This helps remove any residual ‘jujeong’ (an alcohol preservative) which can have a slight odor, and also makes the rice cakes less sticky. For softer rice cakes, you can soak them in cold water for about 10-20 minutes beforehand. However, it’s perfectly fine to use them directly after rinsing.

Step 1

Step 2

In a pot or a wide pan, add the rinsed rice cakes. Sprinkle the sugar over the rice cakes. Adding sugar at this stage helps the rice cakes absorb the sauce more effectively later on.

Step 2

Step 3

Pour enough cold water into the pot to cover the rice cakes. Bring it to a boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling vigorously, add the gochujang and stir well to dissolve it completely. Ensure there are no lumps of gochujang.

Step 3

Step 4

After the gochujang has dissolved, add the soy sauce and gochugaru. Stir everything together to combine the seasonings. Reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer until the liquid has reduced by about half. It’s crucial to stir occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pot. This simmering process allows the rice cakes to absorb the delicious flavors.

Step 4

Step 5

As the sauce thickens, add the fish cakes, which have been cut into bite-sized pieces. If you’re adding hard-boiled eggs, now is the time to put them in. Continue to cook for about 2 more minutes after adding the fish cakes. This allows the fish cakes to absorb the sauce and completes the tteokbokki.

Step 5

Step 6

You can adjust the simmering time to achieve your desired sauce consistency. If you prefer a thicker sauce, let it simmer longer; for a soupier tteokbokki, reduce the cooking time. Always keep an eye on it and stir to prevent sticking. In the final stage, just before serving, stir in the chopped green onions for a fresh aroma and flavor.
