Chewy and Delicious Oil-Tteokbokki Recipe
How to Make Delicious Oil-Tteokbokki
Let’s make Oil-Tteokbokki, a great snack for kids.
Main Ingredients- 3 servings of Tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300g)
- A small bunch of scallions or green onions, finely chopped
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Oil-Tteokbokki is a dish where the rice cakes are lightly fried in oil, creating a slightly crispy exterior and a chewy interior. Here’s how to make this delightful dish at home, just like the pros.
Step 2
First, rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under cold water to soften them. If the rice cakes are very hard, you can blanch them in hot water for 1-2 minutes to make them softer and help them absorb the sauce better. Drain the rice cakes well. Place them in a bowl and add 1.5 Tbsp of soy sauce to lightly season the rice cakes.
Step 3
Next, add 1 Tbsp of sugar for sweetness. If you’re making this for children, it’s a good idea to adjust the sugar amount for a milder sweetness.
Step 4
Prepare the Korean chili powder (1 Tbsp) for a spicy kick, sesame oil (1 Tbsp) for nutty flavor, and sesame seeds for aroma. A pinch of black pepper can also be added for extra depth of flavor, if desired.
Step 5
Add all the prepared seasoning ingredients (gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and optional black pepper) to the bowl with the rice cakes. Gently mix everything with your hands, ensuring the sauce coats the rice cakes evenly. If you prefer it spicier, feel free to add more gochugaru.
Step 6
Heat a lightly oiled pan over low heat. Add the seasoned rice cakes and stir continuously to prevent sticking and burning. Cook until the rice cakes are slightly golden brown and the sauce has thickened. During this process, the rice cakes will fry in the oil, developing their characteristic chewy texture.
Step 7
Finally, add the chopped scallions or green onions and mix lightly one more time. Your delicious Oil-Tteokbokki is ready! It offers a different visual appeal and a rich flavor compared to soup-based tteokbokki.
Step 8
Enjoy it while it’s warm to fully appreciate the slightly crispy exterior and chewy interior. It’s perfect as a snack for kids or as a simple accompaniment to drinks when you’re feeling peckish. Enjoy your cooking!
