Chewy and Savory Braised Tofu in Soy Sauce
[Tofu Dish] Chewy and Deliciously Salty Braised Tofu.
Made a delicious braised tofu dish with easily accessible tofu. It’s a tofu side dish as tasty as Kkanpunggi (spicy fried chicken).
Ingredients- 300g firm tofu
- 1 green chili pepper
- 1 red chili pepper
- 1/2 cup cornstarch (or frying powder)
Seasoning- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp water
- 1 Tbsp cooking wine (like mirin)
- 2 Tbsp corn syrup (or oligodang, corn syrup)
- Pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, lightly pat the firm tofu dry with paper towels, then slice it into 1cm thick pieces for easy eating. Sprinkle generously with cornstarch, ensuring both sides are evenly coated. Coating with cornstarch helps prevent the tofu from breaking and creates a chewy texture on the outside.
Step 2
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the cornstarch-coated tofu and pan-fry until golden brown and slightly crispy on both sides. Frying until the surface is a golden brown color will result in a delicious tofu with a crispy exterior and soft interior.
Step 3
While the tofu is frying, wash the green and red chili peppers, remove the stems, and slice them diagonally about 0.5cm thick. These will add a beautiful color and visual appeal to the dish.
Step 4
In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp water, 1 Tbsp cooking wine, and 2 Tbsp corn syrup. Whisk well to create the sauce. Using corn syrup or oligodang will add a subtle sweetness and a nice glaze.
Step 5
Once the sauce is ready, add the fried tofu pieces to the sauce over low heat. Gently toss the tofu to ensure it’s evenly coated with the sauce.
Step 6
Finally, add the sliced green and red chili peppers and continue to cook for about 1-2 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly and coats the tofu well. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a nutty flavor and a beautiful finish. Enjoy this chewy and savory braised tofu served over warm rice!
