Chewy and Savory Stir-fried Sea Tangle (Miyeok Julgi)
How to Make Delicious Stir-fried Sea Tangle: A Simple Recipe
This is a recipe my friend, who is now a successful banchan (side dish) shop owner, used to make for me when I lived alone. It’s incredibly tasty! I’m sharing her secret, so even beginners can easily make this delightful dish.
Main Ingredients- 420g sea tangle strings (rinsed to remove salt)
- 1/4 carrot
- 1/2 large green onion
Seasoning- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp chicken stock (or water)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp perilla oil
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp chicken stock (or water)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp perilla oil
- A pinch of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, it’s crucial to remove the saltiness from the sea tangle strings. Soak them in cold water for about 30 minutes. Rinse the sea tangle strings thoroughly to remove any residual salt, then refill the bowl with cold water and soak for another 30 minutes. After soaking, taste a small piece; if the saltiness has subsided, squeeze out excess water and prepare for cooking. (If it’s too salty, it might taste bitter!)
Step 2
Thinly julienne the carrot and thinly slice the green onion. Prepping your ingredients like this will make the cooking process much smoother.
Step 3
Heat a little cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the prepared sea tangle strings and stir-fry until they soften slightly. Once the sea tangle is partially cooked, add the julienned carrots and sliced green onions, and continue to stir-fry together until the vegetables are tender.
Step 4
Now it’s time to add the seasonings. Combine the soy sauce, chicken stock (or water), sugar, and red pepper flakes. Stir well and cook until everything is evenly incorporated. Finally, add the minced garlic and drizzle in the perilla oil. Stir-fry for another minute until fragrant, which adds a wonderful depth of flavor.
Step 5
Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a nutty aroma. Your delicious stir-fried sea tangle is now ready! Look at that beautiful sheen – it’s incredibly appetizing!
Step 6
This dish is a perfect side for rice, featuring a delightful balance of spicy, savory flavors and the chewy texture of the sea tangle. It’s wonderful served over warm rice or enjoyed on its own.
