Main Ingredients- 2 sticks Garaetteok (Korean cylindrical rice cakes, longer and thicker than tteokbokki cakes)
- Cooking oil (generous amount for frying)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the garaetteok. If the rice cakes are too hard, you can soften them slightly by briefly soaking them in hot water before proceeding. Cut the prepared garaetteok into approximately 4 equal pieces for a manageable size.
Step 2
Now, let’s shape the garaetteok into a twisted churro style. Leave about half an inch at one end of each garaetteok uncut. Make 3-4 shallow cuts along the length of the rice cake. Gently open these cuts and twist the garaetteok by weaving it through itself to create a beautiful twisted shape, similar to a pretzel. Be gentle when twisting to avoid breaking the rice cake.
Step 3
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot enough, carefully add the twisted garaetteok. Fry them until they turn a golden brown and become crispy on the outside. Flip them occasionally to ensure even cooking. Keep an eye on the heat to prevent them from burning.
Step 4
While the garaetteok are frying, let’s prepare the cinnamon sugar coating. In a wide bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Mix them thoroughly with a fork or spoon until well combined. Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar or cinnamon to your preference.
Step 5
Once the garaetteok are perfectly fried and golden, remove them from the oil and immediately, while they are still hot, toss them into the bowl of cinnamon sugar mixture. Roll them around to ensure the coating adheres evenly to the surface of the rice cakes. Your delicious Garaetteok Churros are now ready! Enjoy them right away while they are warm for the best chewy and crispy texture.
