Main Ingredients

  • 150g Boneless, skin-on chicken thigh
  • 1/2 medium Onion

Savory Stir-Fried Onion Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp Chili Sauce
  • 1.5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 0.5 Tbsp Plum Extract (or syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or other liquid sweetener)
  • 2 Tbsp Water
  • Pinch of Black Pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by preparing the onion. Peel and rinse the half onion, then slice it thinly into strips. Thinly sliced onions will caramelize beautifully and release their sweetness into the sauce, so aim for consistent, fine strips.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s create the delicious sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of chili sauce, 1.5 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, 0.5 tablespoon of plum extract, 1 tablespoon of corn syrup, and 2 tablespoons of water. Add a pinch of black pepper. Stir everything together thoroughly with a spoon until well combined and the sauce begins to slightly thicken.

Step 2

Step 3

It’s time to cook the chicken steak. Take your 150g of boneless chicken thigh. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little cooking oil. Place the chicken thigh in the hot pan and sear it on both sides until it develops a nice golden-brown color. Ensure all sides are nicely browned. You don’t need to cook it all the way through at this stage. Once browned, transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside.

Step 3

Step 4

Wipe out the skillet you used for the chicken, or use a clean one. Add a splash of oil over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions to the pan and sauté them until they become translucent and tender. You’ll notice a lovely sweet aroma as the onions cook down.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the onions are tender and fragrant, pour the prepared sauce into the pan and stir to combine with the onions. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Now, return the browned chicken thigh pieces to the pan. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Let the chicken cook through for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the chicken beautifully. Basting the chicken with the sauce occasionally will enhance the flavor. Once the sauce has reduced slightly and the chicken is cooked through, your delicious chicken steak is ready! Serve it hot, perhaps with some steamed vegetables or a side salad, for a truly satisfying meal.
