Classic Street Toast (Egg and Cabbage Toast)
A Nostalgic Street Toast Recipe: The Perfect Harmony of Fluffy Egg and Crispy Cabbage
Remember the delicious taste from snack stalls outside school? There are times when the simple combination of ketchup and mayonnaise is more comforting than any fancy sauce! This ‘Street Toast,’ featuring golden, crispy egg and fresh cabbage, evokes cherished memories. Let’s make this simple yet incredibly tasty old-fashioned toast together!
Toast Ingredients
- 1 slice Bread
- 2 Eggs
- 1/2 piece Square Ham (e.g., Spam)
- 1/4 cup Cabbage (thinly shredded)
- A little Cooking Oil
Sauces & Seasoning
- 1-2 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 1-2 Tbsp Ketchup
- A pinch of Salt
- A pinch of Black Pepper
- 1-2 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 1-2 Tbsp Ketchup
- A pinch of Salt
- A pinch of Black Pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the square ham. If using canned ham, slice it thinly, about 0.5 cm thick. Thin slices ensure a pleasant texture and even cooking within the toast.
Step 2
Wash the cabbage thoroughly, then shred it as thinly as possible. Thinly shredded cabbage will become tender when cooked and release its natural sweetness.
Step 3
Since the bread will be folded in half during cooking, cut each slice in half beforehand. This makes it easier to shape the toast.
Step 4
Add about 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to a pan and heat over medium heat. Place the sliced ham in the pan and cook until golden brown on both sides. The ham will release its own fat, adding to the flavor.
Step 5
In a bowl, crack the 2 eggs. Add a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper, then whisk well. Don’t over-whisk; a gentle blend is perfect. (Turn off the heat on the pan for now – this prevents the egg from cooking too quickly when you dip the bread.)
Step 6
Lightly oil the pan again and reduce the heat to low. Dip the halved bread slices into the whisked egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated and soaked. Let the bread absorb the egg mixture thoroughly.
Step 7
Place the egg-coated bread onto the pan over low heat and cook slowly. Once the egg around the edges of the bread starts to look golden and cooked, gently lift it with chopsticks or a spatula and flip it over.
Step 8
Now it’s time to add the fillings to the cooked side of one half of the bread. Place the pan-fried ham on top, followed by a generous amount of shredded cabbage. Drizzle with ketchup and mayonnaise according to your preference.
Step 9
Fold the other half of the bread (the side without fillings) over the fillings to create a half-moon shape. Continue to cook over low heat until both sides of the toast are golden brown and the fillings are warmed through. Enjoy your classic street toast, crispy on the outside and delightfully moist inside!
