Colorful Three-Color Skewer Jeon
Easy Chuseok Holiday Jeon Made with Fish Cakes, Crab Sticks, and Peppers
Jeon is a staple for any holiday gathering! Usually, we make about 4-5 types of jeon. Today, instead of the more labor-intensive meat skewers, we’re introducing a special and simple ‘Three-Color Skewer Jeon.’ With round fish cakes, crab sticks, and vibrantly colored peppers, you can quickly create skewers that are as beautiful as they are delicious. Add a festive touch to your holiday table!
Main Ingredients- 4 Square fish cakes
- 4 Imitation crab sticks
- 3 Eggs
- Vegetable oil, for cooking
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the green and red chili peppers that will add color. Remove the stems, cut the peppers in half, and carefully remove the seeds. Rinse them under running water and pat them dry. Patting them thoroughly with a paper towel will ensure they are well-dried.
Step 2
Next, prepare the imitation crab sticks. Slice them diagonally at a thickness of about 0.7 cm. This angle will make them fit nicely with the fish cakes and create a beautiful appearance.
Step 3
Now, take the round, elongated square fish cakes with a hole in the center. We will insert the prepared green and red chili peppers into these holes. Let’s start by inserting the red chili pepper first.
Step 4
Carefully insert the chili peppers into the holes of the fish cakes. Alternating between green and red peppers will result in even more visually appealing three-color skewers.
Step 5
Slice the imitation crab sticks so they are about the same thickness as the chili peppers you’ve prepared. Matching the thickness will ensure a balanced look when assembled on the skewer.
Step 6
It’s time to assemble the skewers. Using a toothpick or skewer, first thread one piece of imitation crab stick, then the fish cake with the chili pepper inserted, and finally another piece of imitation crab stick. Assemble them in the order: ‘crab stick – fish cake – crab stick’.
Step 7
Continue to thread the remaining ingredients onto the skewers in the same sequence. Typically, using two square fish cakes and about four crab sticks will create a well-balanced skewer. This process will yield a total of two skewers.
Step 8
Now, let’s make the egg wash. Crack 2-3 eggs into a bowl, add a pinch of salt for seasoning, and whisk them thoroughly with a fork or whisk. Dip the assembled skewers into the egg wash, ensuring both sides are evenly coated.
Step 9
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of vegetable oil. Place the egg-coated three-color skewers in the pan and cook, flipping them occasionally, until they are golden brown on both sides. Since the ingredients are already safe to eat, you only need to cook until the egg coating is set and golden.
Step 10
To preserve the vibrant colors, it’s best to avoid coating these skewers with flour. A simple egg wash is sufficient; it helps the ingredients stick together and enhances the flavor. This method simplifies the process while maintaining both visual appeal and taste.
Step 11
And there you have it – the ‘Colorful Three-Color Skewer Jeon,’ made quickly with simple ingredients and easy steps! They look fantastic and taste wonderful, making them a perfect addition to your holiday feast or even as a special snack for kids.
