Ingredients- 200g frozen tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 1.5 cups)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 3 sausages (Vienna or your preferred type)
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1/2 cup (100ml) milk
- 1 cup (200ml) water
- Pinch of black pepper
- 6 Tbsp tomato sauce (generous)
- 1 handful (approx. 50g) mozzarella cheese
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare the ingredients that will add flavor and texture to your Rosé Tteokbokki. Vienna sausages are convenient due to their size, but if you’re using longer sausages, cut them into 4 pieces or make diagonal scores on them. Scoring helps the sauce penetrate and enhances the flavor.
Step 2
Onions add sweetness and depth to tteokbokki, so slice them into thick strips. This way, they retain a pleasant texture when stir-fried, making the dish even more enjoyable.
Step 3
To achieve a chewy texture, rinse the frozen rice cakes under cold water about twice. Then, blanch them in boiling water for just about 1 minute. The exterior should become soft, but they don’t need to be fully cooked inside, as they will continue to cook with the other ingredients in the sauce.
Step 4
Cut the sausages into bite-sized pieces. If using long sausages, make diagonal scores. As they cook, the cuts will open up beautifully, making them visually appealing and allowing the sauce to seep in nicely.
Step 5
Look at all these prepped ingredients – they’re already making the dish look delicious! Now, let’s get cooking.
Step 6
In a deep pan or pot suitable for making Rosé Tteokbokki, heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they become translucent and tender, releasing their aroma. This step allows the natural sweetness of the onions to fully develop.
Step 7
Add the prepared sausages to the pan and stir-fry with the onions for another 1-2 minutes until they are lightly browned and fragrant.
Step 8
Drain the rice cakes well and add them to the pan. Stir gently with a spatula to prevent sticking, and sauté for about 1 minute. This light stir-frying coats the rice cakes with oil, making them chewier.
Step 9
Now, let’s create the creamy Rosé sauce base. Pour in 1/2 cup (100ml) of milk and 1 cup (200ml) of water. Even without added heavy cream, the milk provides a wonderfully smooth and rich flavor. Stir everything together well.
Step 10
Add a pinch of black pepper and 6 generous tablespoons of tomato sauce, the key ingredient for Rosé Tteokbokki. Stir well to combine everything and bring to a simmer. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and coats the ingredients beautifully.
Step 11
Finally, sprinkle 1 handful of mozzarella cheese over the tteokbokki. Cover the pan for a minute or two until the cheese is melted and gooey, creating a wonderfully appetizing Rosé Tteokbokki. Sliced cheese can also be used. Enjoy your delicious creation!
