Leftover bread is a treasure trove for deliciousness! Transform it into the most wonderfully soft and moist French toast. By adding heavy cream and condensed milk to the egg mixture and letting the bread soak overnight, you’ll achieve a dessert-like quality that’s simply irresistible. This recipe is perfect for a delightful kid’s snack or a charming brunch for your home cafe. Let’s get started!
Ingredients- 5-6 slices of bread (thick slices work best)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 pinch of salt
- Butter, as needed
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a bowl, crack the eggs. Break the chalazae (the stringy white parts) and whisk thoroughly until well combined. Removing the chalazae contributes to a smoother texture.
Step 2
Add the sweet condensed milk (1/2 cup) to the whisked eggs. Sprinkle in a pinch of salt; this will enhance the sweetness and add a balanced flavor.
Step 3
Finally, pour in the heavy cream (1/2 cup) for added richness and moisture. Whisk everything together until the mixture is smooth and well incorporated, creating your rich custard base.
Step 4
Prepare your bread slices. You can soak them whole, but cutting them in half allows the custard mixture to penetrate more deeply, ensuring extra moistness. Feel free to cut them as you prefer.
Step 5
Melt a generous amount of butter in a pan over medium-low heat. Let the butter melt slowly and coat the entire surface of the pan evenly. Be careful not to let the butter burn.
Step 6
Once the butter is melted and fragrant, carefully place the bread slices, which have been well-soaked in the custard mixture, into the pan. Be mindful not to over-soak the bread, as it might become too fragile to handle. Cook for a few minutes on each side until golden brown and beautifully caramelized. Cooking over low heat ensures the inside becomes wonderfully moist.
Step 7
Your French toast is ready when both sides are a gorgeous golden-brown color and the edges are slightly crisp. Gently remove from the pan.
Step 8
Arrange the warm, freshly cooked French toast on a plate. For extra sweetness, drizzle with maple syrup or honey to your liking. If you don’t have syrup, they are delicious just as they are!
Step 9
Here’s another delightful tip: Immediately after removing the French toast from the pan, sprinkle a little sugar over the hot surface. The sugar will melt and caramelize, creating an extra layer of flavor and a beautiful glaze. Give it a try!
