Gimbap Ingredients

  • 1 serving warm rice (approx. 1 bowl)
  • 1 handful carrots (thinly julienned)
  • 1 handful cabbage (thinly julienned)
  • Pickled radish (danmuji), to taste (prepared slightly shorter than the nori sheet)
  • 1 slice apple (thinly sliced)
  • 5-6 pieces prepared salmon (sushi-grade or smoked salmon)
  • 1 sheet nori (sushi seaweed wrapper, rolling mat recommended)

Rice Seasoning & Vegetable Dressing

  • 1/2 tsp rock salt
  • 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In the warm cooked rice, gently mix in 1/2 tsp rock salt, 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil using a spatula. The key is to mix gently to avoid mashing the rice grains.

Step 1

Step 2

In a bowl, combine the thinly julienned carrots and cabbage with 2 Tbsp mayonnaise and mix thoroughly. To maintain a crisp texture, avoid over-mixing.

Step 2

Step 3

Place the nori sheet on a bamboo rolling mat. Spread the prepared rice thinly and evenly over about two-thirds of the nori. If you let the rice cool slightly, it will prevent the nori from becoming soggy.

Step 3

Step 4

Arrange the mayonnaise-coated vegetables (carrots, cabbage) attractively over the rice.

Step 4

Step 5

Place the thinly sliced apple pieces and salmon pieces lengthwise on top of the vegetables. You can substitute cucumber for apple if desired.

Step 5

Step 6

Using the bamboo mat, firmly roll the gimbap forward, pulling gently to ensure the ingredients stay in place. Lightly moisten the edge of the nori with water or rice grains to help it seal. Slice into bite-sized pieces and enjoy!
