Crisp and Sweet Steamed Onion Salad
The Ultimate Side Dish Without Stir-Frying! A Flavorful Onion Salad to Awaken Your Appetite
This onion salad, with its delightful crispness and subtle sweetness, is a true rice thief! Unlike stir-fried dishes, the steaming process maximizes the onion’s natural sweetness, making it an incredibly delicious and simple side dish. Here’s an easy recipe.
Main Ingredients- 1 large onion
- A small amount of green onion (white parts preferred)
Seasoning- 1 Tbsp soup soy sauce (or regular soy sauce)
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
- A pinch of black pepper
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp soup soy sauce (or regular soy sauce)
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
- A pinch of black pepper
- A pinch of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare one large onion. Peel and wash it thoroughly, then slice it into approximately 0.5 cm thick strips. Avoid slicing too thinly, as it can become mushy; a moderate thickness is best.
Step 2
The sliced onion strips will likely be stuck together. Gently separate them with your hands, ensuring each strip is individual. This helps the seasoning to be distributed evenly.
Step 3
Prepare a steamer and bring the water to a rolling boil. Once boiling, arrange the sliced onions evenly on the steamer basket.
Step 4
Cover the steamer and steam over high heat for exactly 3 minutes. Over-steaming can make the onions too soft, so adhering to the time is crucial. Steaming for just 3 minutes preserves the onion’s crispness while maximizing its sweetness.
Step 5
While the onions are steaming for 3 minutes, prepare a small amount of green onion (mostly the white parts). Finely chop it; this will add a fragrant aroma to your onion salad.
Step 6
After steaming for 3 minutes, drain the onions in a colander to remove excess moisture, or briefly rinse them under cold water to cool them down. Don’t make them ice-cold; just cool them slightly.
Step 7
Now it’s time to season the onions. In a bowl, combine the cooled onions and chopped green onions. Add the soup soy sauce and minced garlic. *Except for the sesame oil, sesame seeds, and black pepper*, add all other seasoning ingredients and gently mix the onions, being careful not to mash them.
Step 8
Once the seasonings are somewhat incorporated, add 1/2 Tbsp of sesame oil, and black pepper and sesame seeds to your preference. Gently toss one last time, and your delicious onion salad is ready! You can enjoy it immediately, or let it chill in the refrigerator for a bit to let the flavors meld even further.
