Crispy Air Fryer Roasted Seaweed and Seasoned Laver Flakes
Easy and Delicious Seaweed Snacks: Air Fryer Roasted Gim and Doljaban
As winter sets in, I decided to make a delicious side dish for my family by air frying their favorite seaweed. Roasting seaweed traditionally can be messy with crumbs flying everywhere, but thanks to the air fryer, I can now make it easily and conveniently.
Ingredients- 10 sheets Dried Laver (Gim)
- 50g Seasoned Laver Flakes (Doljaban)
- Kukseong Salt (or Sea Salt, to taste)
- Grapeseed Oil (or other neutral oil, to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Before you start tearing the seasoned laver flakes (doljaban), prepare a bowl with high sides or a wide container to minimize any scattering of crumbs. Break the doljaban into smaller, bite-sized pieces by hand. This process can create quite a few crumbs, so it’s best to do it inside the prepared bowl.
Step 2
Now, let’s add flavor to the torn doljaban. Lightly sprinkle with salt (kukseong salt or sea salt) and drizzle with grapeseed oil. Gently mix with your hands, ensuring the oil and salt are evenly distributed over all the flakes. This will make them extra savory and delicious when roasted.
Step 3
Spread the seasoned doljaban evenly in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Start by air frying at 120°C (250°F) for 15 minutes. Halfway through, give it a good toss to ensure even cooking, and then continue to air fry for another 10 minutes. (Tip: I initially set the temperature to 150°C (300°F), but it started smelling burnt, so I lowered it to 120°C (250°F), and it turned out perfectly delicious! Air fryer models vary, so keep an eye on it and adjust the temperature accordingly to prevent burning.) They are ready when they are golden brown and crispy. This is how you achieve perfectly roasted doljaban.
Step 4
Whole sheets of laver (gim) can be too large and might touch the heating element, causing them to burn. To prevent this and achieve a crispier result, it’s best to cut them into manageable pieces. Typically, cutting each sheet into four pieces is a good size. (Tip: I’ve burnt seaweed before by cutting it too large, so this time I cut them smaller. Cutting them smaller helps prevent burning and results in a much crispier texture.)
Step 5
Place the cut seaweed sheets into a ceramic dish or a heat-resistant glass container and air fry them. Set the temperature to 120°C (250°F) for about 20 minutes. However, it’s crucial to check periodically to ensure they aren’t burning. During this time, swap the positions of the seaweed sheets from top to bottom. Using a container makes it easier to cook smaller batches and simplifies the process of changing their positions.
Step 6
And there you have it! Deliciously crispy air fryer roasted seaweed, ready to be enjoyed as a perfect side dish alongside the seasoned laver flakes. This is sure to be a hit with your family!
