Main Ingredients

  • 7 Garae-tteok (Korean rice cakes, approx. 350-400g)
  • 1 Tbsp Perilla Oil (for frying the tteok)
  • 1/3 Tbsp Low-Sodium Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or rice syrup/oligosaccharide, adjust sweetness as desired)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the Rice Cakes: Start by preparing the garae-tteok. Cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 3-4 cm in length, making them easy to eat.

Step 1

Step 2

Fry the Rice Cakes: Heat 1 tablespoon of perilla oil generously in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the cut rice cakes and fry them until they become golden brown and crispy on all sides. This step is crucial for achieving the signature crispy outside and chewy inside texture.

Step 2

Step 3

Set Aside Fried Rice Cakes: Transfer the crispy fried rice cakes to a plate temporarily. This helps prevent the sauce from burning and maintains the crispiness of the tteok.

Step 3

Step 4

Make the Sweet & Salty Sauce: In the same pan (no need to add more oil), combine 1/3 tablespoon of low-sodium soy sauce and 1 tablespoon of corn syrup (or rice syrup/oligosaccharide). Cook over low heat until the sauce just begins to bubble vigorously. Immediately turn off the heat; be careful not to overcook as the sauce can burn quickly.

Step 4

Step 5

Coat Tteok in Sauce & Serve: Return the fried rice cakes to the pan with the sauce. Gently toss them to ensure they are evenly coated. Serve immediately while warm for the best crispy and chewy experience. You can garnish with nuts or sesame seeds if desired.
