Main Ingredients
  • 2 slices of bread (slightly stale bread works well too)
  • 1 cup tempura flour (standard paper cup size)
  • 1 cup water (standard paper cup size)
  • Cooking oil (for deep frying, sufficient amount)

Sweet Coating
  • 1/2 cup sugar (standard paper cup size, adjust to taste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, cut the bread slices in half to make them easier to handle. You can also cut them into quarters or lengthwise strips, depending on your preference. Be careful not to cut them too thinly, as they might break apart during frying.

Step 2

In a bowl, combine 1 cup of tempura flour. Gradually add 1 cup of water while mixing to create a batter. The ideal consistency is neither too thick nor too thin; it should flow smoothly off the whisk. Mix until you have a smooth batter with no lumps.

Step 3

Once the batter is ready, dip the cut bread slices into it, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated with the tempura batter. A slightly thicker coating will result in an even crispier texture.

Step 4

Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan or pot to about 170°C (340°F). A good test is to drop a small amount of batter into the oil; if it floats to the surface immediately, the oil is ready. Carefully place the coated bread slices into the hot oil and fry until they turn a beautiful golden brown on both sides. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning. Once fried, remove the bread from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 5

Now for the sweet coating! Place the fried bread slices and 1/2 cup of sugar into a clean plastic bag or ziplock bag. Seal the bag tightly and gently shake it. This will ensure the sugar evenly coats the crispy fried bread.

Step 6

Your sweet, crispy fried bread is ready! Enjoy immediately while warm for the best experience: a satisfyingly crunchy exterior and a soft, warm interior, all coated in delightful sweetness. They’re reminiscent of freshly made doughnuts or sweet twists. This is a perfect, easy-to-make treat that brings back fond memories!
