Waffle Batter Ingredients- Active Sourdough Starter 400g (100% hydration, all-purpose flour)
- Unrefined Sugar 35g (adjust to taste)
- Pinch of Salt (enhances flavor)
- Vegetable Oil or Melted Unsalted Butter 50g (for richness and tenderness)
- Baking Powder 1/2 tsp (for crispiness)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, crack 2 eggs into a bowl and whisk them gently. This helps to remove any eggy smell and ensures the batter mixes evenly.
Step 2
Add the unrefined sugar (35g) for sweetness and a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors to the whisked eggs. Stir well until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Don’t overmix.
Step 3
Next, incorporate the baking powder (1/2 tsp) to help the waffles puff up, and the vegetable oil or melted butter (50g) for a tender and rich texture. Whisk everything together until well combined.
Step 4
Now for the star ingredient: add the active sourdough starter (400g). Use a whisk to mix it into the batter until smooth and free of lumps. This starter should be 100% hydration, made with all-purpose flour, and is typically leftover from feeding your starter. The mild tang from the sourdough will add a wonderful depth of flavor to your waffles.
Step 5
Your smooth and luscious waffle batter is now ready! It’s time to preheat your waffle maker. Ensuring the waffle maker is properly heated is key to achieving that perfect crispiness.
Step 6
Carefully ladle the batter onto the preheated waffle maker, about one ladleful at a time. Be mindful not to overfill, as the batter will expand. Adjust the amount based on the size of your waffle maker.
Step 7
Close the lid of the waffle maker and cook over medium-low heat until the waffles are a beautiful golden brown and delightfully crispy around the edges, typically about 3-5 minutes. Your healthy sourdough waffles are now ready to be enjoyed! Serve them with your favorite toppings like maple syrup, fresh fruits, or whipped cream.
