Crispy Outside, Juicy Inside! Super Simple Shrimp Toast (Menbosha) Recipe
Make impressive shrimp toast at home! This recipe shows you how to easily and quickly make Menbosha, crispy on the outside and packed with succulent, bouncy shrimp paste inside. Perfect for special occasions or your next home party.
Ingredients- 100g minced shrimp (fresh or thawed frozen shrimp)
- 1/4 medium onion, finely minced (about 50g)
- Pinch of salt (approx. 1/4 tsp for 100g shrimp)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 paper cup (approx. 30g) breadcrumbs (to bind the shrimp mixture)
- 2 Tbsp튀김가루 (Korean frying mix, for extra crispiness)
- 5 slices of bread (crustless bread or remove crusts)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the star of the Menbosha: the shrimp and onion. Finely mince fresh shrimp with a knife. If using thawed shrimp, drain any excess water before mincing. Finely chop the onion as well (a fine dice or mince) for a better texture.
Step 2
In a bowl, combine the minced shrimp and onion. Add a pinch of salt and the black pepper to season. Mix in the breadcrumbs and the 튀김가루. Knead the mixture well until it becomes sticky and cohesive. Developing this stickiness is key to achieving that delightful, firm shrimp texture.
Step 3
Next, let’s prepare the bread. Carefully trim off the crusts from each slice of bread. Then, cut each slice in half horizontally and then in half again, resulting in 4 equal pieces per slice. Generously spread the shrimp mixture prepared in step 1 onto one piece of bread. Top with another piece of bread to create a sandwich. Gently press down with your hands or a knife to ensure the filling adheres well.
Step 4
Heat your frying oil to about 170-180°C (340-355°F). You can test the oil temperature by dropping a small piece of bread; it should sizzle and float to the surface immediately. Carefully place the assembled Menbosha into the hot oil. Fry over medium heat, turning occasionally, until both sides are golden brown and crispy. This should take about 3-4 minutes. Be mindful of the heat; if it’s too high, the outside might burn before the inside is cooked through.
