Crispy Red Cabbage and Tuna Donburi: A Fridge-Cleanout Recipe
Quick & Easy Red Cabbage Tuna Donburi: How to Make a Delicious Meal from Your Fridge
While regular cabbage is commonly used, today we’re making a ‘fridge cleanout’ recipe with vibrant red cabbage! We’re reducing the rice portion and topping it with crunchy red cabbage and savory tuna for a satisfying donburi-style meal.
Main Ingredients- Red cabbage: 1-2 handfuls (approx. 100-150g), thinly sliced
- Canned tuna: 1 can (approx. 150g), drained
- Egg: 1 (optional, add to your preference)
Seasoning- Oyster sauce: 1 Tbsp
- Oyster sauce: 1 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the red cabbage thoroughly, pat it dry, and then thinly slice it into shreds. For a single serving, about 1-2 handfuls is appropriate. (If using regular cabbage, prepare it the same way.)
Step 2
Heat 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the shredded red cabbage and stir-fry for about 1 minute, just until it becomes slightly tender but still retains its crispiness. Be careful not to overcook it, as it will become mushy.
Step 3
Once the red cabbage has slightly wilted, add the entire can of drained tuna to the pan and stir-fry together. Use chopsticks or a similar utensil to gently break up the tuna as it cooks, ensuring it doesn’t clump together.
Step 4
When the tuna is warmed through and the ingredients are well combined, add 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce to enhance the umami flavor. Stir-fry everything together until evenly coated. You can adjust the amount of oyster sauce to your taste.
Step 5
Your delicious red cabbage and tuna stir-fry is ready! It’s great as a side dish on its own, but it makes for an even more satisfying meal when served as a donburi.
Step 6
Place a generous portion of warm rice in a bowl. Top the rice with the freshly prepared red cabbage and tuna stir-fry. For an extra treat, consider adding a fried egg on top to enjoy an even richer flavor. Enjoy your meal!
