Crispy & Savory Dried Kelp Crisps (Dashima Bugak)
Easy Homemade Dashima Bugak: Perfect for Drinks, Side Dishes, and Snacks!
Don’t let that dried kelp in your fridge go to waste! You can transform it into a delightful snack to enjoy with drinks, a satisfying side dish for rice, or a special treat for kids. When fried to a perfect crisp, its savory flavor is irresistible to all ages. This recipe is incredibly simple, making it perfect for beginners. I’m sharing it so everyone can easily make it at home and add a touch of deliciousness to their day.
Main Ingredients- 1 sheet dried kelp (Dashima), approx. 20x20cm (rinsed and patted dry)
Seasoning & Frying- 1 Tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 6 Tbsp cooking oil (or enough to generously cover the kelp when frying)
- 1 Tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 6 Tbsp cooking oil (or enough to generously cover the kelp when frying)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the dried kelp sheet into bite-sized pieces. Small, manageable pieces are best, especially if children will be enjoying them.
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare for frying. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add about 6 tablespoons of cooking oil. You want enough oil to generously coat the kelp pieces.
Step 3
Once the oil is moderately hot, carefully add the kelp pieces to the pan. Please be cautious, as hot oil can splatter! It’s recommended to use tongs or a spatula for safety.
Step 4
Keep the heat on medium and stir the kelp continuously as it fries. You’ll notice the kelp starting to puff up and increase in volume. As soon as it begins to puff and turns a light golden color, remove it immediately to prevent burning. Over-frying will make it hard and burnt, so timing is key!
Step 5
Immediately after frying, drain the kelp on a wire rack to remove excess oil. This step is crucial for maintaining its crispiness and preventing it from becoming soggy.
Step 6
While the fried kelp is still warm, toss it with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Coating it while warm helps the sugar adhere better, creating a delicious sweet and savory flavor. Feel free to adjust the sugar amount to your preference.
Step 7
Store the finished kelp crisps in an airtight container to prevent them from becoming chewy. They are best enjoyed within 1-2 days for maximum crispness. You can find more delicious recipes like this on my Instagram @happy_oneul!
