Crispy Sweet Potato Sticks
Crispier and Tastier Than Highway Rest Stop Sweet Potato Sticks (Ready in 10 Minutes!)
This is a simple recipe that only requires sweet potatoes and oil. Enjoy a delicious sweet potato snack that’s just as tasty as the ones you get at highway rest stops.
Sweet Potato Stick Ingredients (Serves 4)- 6 medium sweet potatoes
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly. Then, use a peeler or a knife to carefully remove the skin. Removing the skin cleanly will result in a more refined and delicious stick.
Step 2
Cut the peeled sweet potatoes in half. Now, we’ll thinly slice them into sticks. If they’re too thick, they’ll take a long time to fry, and if they’re too thin, they might break. Aim for a thickness of about 0.3-0.5 cm. After slicing, pat the sweet potato sticks dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture. Remaining moisture can cause oil splatter and prevent the sweet potatoes from becoming crispy.
Step 3
For variety, slice one sweet potato into thin, round chips. Now, generously pour oil into a frying pan and heat it over medium heat. Once the oil is hot (you’ll see small bubbles forming around a wooden chopstick dipped in it), carefully add the sliced sweet potato sticks and chips.
Step 4
The sweet potato sticks might seem floppy when first added to the hot oil, but don’t worry! As they cook, their moisture will evaporate, and they will gradually become crispy. Once the sweet potato sticks start to turn a golden brown color, flip them to ensure even cooking. Keep an eye on the color to avoid burning; removing them at the right time is key.
Step 5
Once perfectly fried, transfer the sweet potato sticks and chips to a wire rack or a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Enjoy them immediately while they’re warm for a delightful crispy exterior and a soft, sweet interior. You can also sprinkle them with a little sugar or cinnamon for an extra touch of flavor if desired.
