Essential Ingredients

  • 1 can Spam
  • 1 bowl of cooked rice
  • A bit of roasted seaweed (for eyes, nose, mouth)
  • 1 slice of processed cheese (for eyes)
  • 2 eggs

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Slice the Spam into 1cm thick pieces. Then, cut these pieces into shapes suitable for Totoro’s face. (Tip: You can use the Spam can itself to help shape the Spam slices for an even cuter look.)

Step 1

Step 2

Whisk the 2 eggs thoroughly in a bowl, perhaps with a pinch of salt. Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and pour in the beaten eggs to make a rolled omelet (tamagoyaki). While the omelet is cooking, pan-fry the sliced Spam until golden brown on both sides. This will enhance its savory flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the rolled omelet has cooled slightly, slice it into approximately 1cm thick pieces. This will form a tender layer between the rice and the Spam.

Step 3

Step 4

Line a clean Spam can with plastic wrap, ensuring there’s enough overhang to help with shaping later. Press a layer of warm cooked rice firmly into the bottom of the wrapped can. Follow with the sliced omelet, then another layer of rice, pressing down gently. Finally, place the pan-fried Spam on top. Carefully gather the edges of the plastic wrap and twist to tightly shape and secure the musubi.

Step 4

Step 5

Gently unwrap the shaped musubi. To create the Totoro face, use a cookie cutter or knife to cut out circles from the processed cheese for the eyes. Then, use scissors or a knife to cut shapes from the roasted seaweed for the pupils, nose, and mouth, and attach them to the musubi. Your adorable Totoro musubi is now complete!
