Easy Seaweed (Dasima) Salad Using Market-Bought Salted Seaweed
This recipe uses readily available salted seaweed (Ssam Dasima) from the supermarket to create a refreshing and flavorful seaweed salad. It’s a delightful side dish featuring the chewy texture of seaweed combined with the crispness of onions, perfect for a light meal.

Step 1
First, it’s crucial to remove the saltiness from the salted seaweed. Soak the seaweed in clean water for at least 30 minutes to desalinate it. Changing the water a few times will help it desalt more effectively.

Next, prepare the onion, which will add a delightful crunch to the seaweed salad. Peel and wash one onion thoroughly, then slice it into very thin, fine strips.

To make the onion milder and more pleasant to eat, we’ll remove its pungent flavor. Soak the sliced onion in cold water for at least 15 minutes to reduce its sharp, spicy taste.

Rinse the desalted seaweed thoroughly under running water. Once the excess water is removed, cut the seaweed into thicker strips that are easy to eat. You can use scissors if cutting with a knife is difficult. Squeeze out any remaining water firmly with your hands and place the cut seaweed into a mixing bowl.

Drain the soaked onion (after removing its pungency) and add it to the bowl with the seaweed. Ensure the onion is well-drained to prevent the seasoning from becoming watery.

Now, let’s make the delicious seasoning. In the bowl, combine 1.5 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp fish sauce (or soy sauce), 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, and 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds. Mix these seasoning ingredients well with a spoon or spatula until a uniform dressing is formed.

Add the prepared seasoning to the bowl containing the seaweed and onion. Gently mix and toss everything together with your hands until the seasoning is evenly distributed over the seaweed and onion. Be careful not to mix too vigorously, as this could break down the seaweed.
