Delicious and Spicy Oil-Fried Rice Cakes Recipe (Gireum Tteokbokki)
Make Delicious Oil-Fried Rice Cakes at Home for a Traditional Snack
Wondering what to make with the garae-tteok (long rice cakes) you received during the Lunar New Year holidays? I decided to make Gireum Tteokbokki! Oh, but I realized I had leftover tteokbokki rice cakes in the fridge, so I decided to use those instead of the garae-tteok for another time. Let’s make a delicious and simple dish using leftover rice cakes!
Main Ingredients- 15 Tteokbokki rice cakes (or your desired amount)
- 2 Scallions, chopped (for garnish)
- 2 Tbsp Sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your tteokbokki rice cakes. If they are hard, soaking them in cold water for a short while will make them softer and tastier. Chop the scallions finely for garnish.
Step 2
In a small bowl, combine the gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Mix well to create a delicious sauce. Let it sit for a moment to allow the sugar to dissolve.
Step 3
Add the tteokbokki rice cakes to the prepared sauce and mix them thoroughly with chopsticks or a spatula, ensuring the sauce coats each rice cake evenly. It’s important that every piece of rice cake is coated.
Step 4
Heat a pan over medium heat and add 0.5 tablespoon of cooking oil. Add the sauced rice cakes and begin stir-frying. Be careful with the heat to prevent the sauce from burning. Keep stirring to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the pan.
Step 5
Once the rice cakes are cooked and the sauce has thickened slightly, drizzle in the remaining 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Reduce the heat to low or turn off the stove, and stir-fry for another minute using residual heat. This will enhance the nutty aroma of the sesame oil.
Step 6
Transfer the deliciously stir-fried oil-fried rice cakes to a serving plate. Sprinkle with the chopped scallions and sesame seeds. Your mouth-watering Gireum Tteokbokki is ready to be enjoyed! It’s best served immediately while warm.
