Main Ingredients- 200g Beef for Chop Steak
- 1/2 Onion
- 1/2 Green Bell Pepper
- 1/2 Red Bell Pepper
- 1/4 Carrot
- Mushrooms (Shiitake, King Oyster, etc., to your preference)
Chop Steak Sauce & Marinade- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- Pinch of Salt
- Pinch of Black Pepper
- 4 Tbsp Tonkatsu (Pork Cutlet) Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Ketchup
- 2 Tbsp Cooking Wine (or Mirin)
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- Pinch of Salt
- Pinch of Black Pepper
- 4 Tbsp Tonkatsu (Pork Cutlet) Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Ketchup
- 2 Tbsp Cooking Wine (or Mirin)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 200g of beef cut for chop steak. Drizzle 2 Tbsp of olive oil over the beef, then sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper. Let it marinate for 20-30 minutes. Marinating with olive oil helps to tenderize the meat and can also help remove any unwanted odors.
Step 2
While the beef is marinating, prepare your vegetables. Feel free to use up any leftover vegetables you have in the fridge! This recipe uses onion, carrot, and green bell pepper, but you can add or omit any vegetables you like, such as red bell peppers, broccoli, or mushrooms.
Step 3
Dice all the prepared vegetables into uniform cubes, about 1.5cm to 2cm in size. This ensures that the vegetables and meat cook at a similar rate. Try to keep the sizes consistent, not too large or too small.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the delicious chop steak sauce. Measurements are approximate using a tablespoon. Combine 4 Tbsp of Tonkatsu sauce, 1 Tbsp of oyster sauce, 1 Tbsp of ketchup, and 2 Tbsp of cooking wine. You can substitute mirin for cooking wine. Adjust the sweetness and saltiness to your liking by modifying the sauce ingredient ratios.
Step 5
Once all ingredients are prepped, it’s time to start cooking! Heat a pan with a little olive oil over high heat. Add the marinated beef and sear it quickly on all sides. Cooking over high heat for a short time locks in the juices, keeping the meat moist and flavorful. (Tip: If you have thinly sliced garlic, sautéing it in the oil first will add extra aroma. Definitely use it if you have it!)
Step 6
Once the beef is browned on the outside, immediately add the diced vegetables to the pan. Keep the heat on high and stir-fry the beef and vegetables together until they are well combined.
Step 7
Stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender but still retain a bit of crispness. Avoid overcooking them until they become mushy. Once the vegetables are slightly softened, pour in the prepared chop steak sauce. (Apologies for the slightly blurry photo here!)
Step 8
Pour in the sauce and quickly toss everything together for about 1 minute, ensuring it’s well combined. Be careful not to overcook the meat, as it can become tough. Quickly stir-fry and serve! Plate the freshly cooked chop steak beautifully, and your delicious homemade chop steak is ready to enjoy!
