Fresh Ingredients

  • 400g beef for steak (sirloin, tenderloin, or your preferred cut)
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/3 red bell pepper
  • 1/3 yellow bell pepper
  • 3 fresh button mushrooms
  • 1 Tbsp butter for richness

The Secret Sauce

  • 4 Tbsp steak sauce
  • 2 Tbsp oyster sauce for depth
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup for a sweet and tangy flavor
  • 1 Tbsp sugar for sweetness adjustment
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic for aroma

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s start by preparing the vegetables. Wash and pat dry the 3 button mushrooms, 1/3 red bell pepper, and 1/3 yellow bell pepper. Then, dice them into cubes roughly the same size as the beef pieces. Cutting them uniformly ensures even cooking and makes the dish look more appealing!

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s make the special sauce that will elevate your chopped steak. First, pour 4 tablespoons of steak sauce into a bowl. (The original recipe mentioned gochujang, but it’s not a typical ingredient in standard chopped steak sauces. I’ve focused on steak sauce, oyster sauce, ketchup, sugar, and garlic. If you wish to incorporate gochujang, feel free to add about 1 tablespoon according to your preference.)

Step 2

Step 3

Add 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce to enhance the savory flavor, and 2 tablespoons of ketchup for that classic sweet and tangy profile.

Step 3

Step 4

Adjust the sweetness with 1 tablespoon of sugar, and add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic for a fragrant boost. Mix all the sauce ingredients thoroughly with chopsticks or a whisk until well combined. Your delicious homemade sauce is ready!

Step 4

Step 5

Now, it’s time to cook the star of the dish: the beef. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a heated pan over medium-high heat. Once the butter is melted, add the cubed steak to the pan and sear it until golden brown on all sides. Cooking at high heat helps to seal in the juices, preserving the rich flavor of the meat.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the surface of the beef is lightly browned and the juices are locked in, add all the prepared vegetables – onion, bell peppers, and mushrooms – to the pan. Stir-fry them with the beef. It’s important not to overcook the vegetables until they become too soft; aim to cook them just until the mushrooms begin to soften while retaining a slight crispness.

Step 6

Step 7

When the mushrooms are almost cooked, pour the pre-mixed sauce into the pan. Stir-fry quickly over high heat for about a minute or less, ensuring the sauce coats the vegetables and meat evenly. Finally, sprinkle some sesame seeds for a nutty aroma and give it a final quick toss to finish. (Important note: Avoid overcooking, as it can make the beef tough. Quick stir-frying over high heat is key to a tender chopped steak!)
