Kimchi and Bacon Rolls: A Harmonious Blend of Tangy and Savory
A delightful brunch dish combining the zesty tang of aged kimchi with the savory, crispy notes of bacon. It’s crucial to rinse the kimchi to reduce its saltiness for a perfectly balanced flavor. Enjoy this simple yet special meal!
Essential Ingredients- 8 sheets Aged Kimchi (rinsed to remove excess salt)
- 1 bowl Warm Cooked Rice
- 8 slices Bacon
Rice Seasoning- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- 1 tsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
- Pinch of Salt (for rice seasoning)
- Pinch of Black Pepper (for rice seasoning)
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- 1 tsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
- Pinch of Salt (for rice seasoning)
- Pinch of Black Pepper (for rice seasoning)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Rinse the aged kimchi thoroughly under running water to remove excess saltiness and any sour taste. Soaking it in water for about 20 minutes will help it reach the perfect seasoning level. (Be careful not to soak for too long, or the kimchi flavor might become too mild.)
Step 2
In a bowl of warm rice, add sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Gently mix it all together until well combined. The warmth of the rice helps the seasonings meld beautifully.
Step 3
Take a portion of the seasoned rice and shape it into a long, oval log with your hands. If the rice is too sticky and doesn’t hold its shape well, lightly dampen your hands with water while shaping it.
Step 4
Lay out the rinsed aged kimchi sheets flat on a cutting board. Place the shaped rice log on top of the kimchi.
Step 5
Starting from the bottom edge of the kimchi, carefully wrap the rice log, tucking the kimchi in snugly as you roll. Gently stretch the kimchi to ensure a tight, even roll.
Step 6
It’s best to use the broad, tender leaves of the aged kimchi for rolling, as they wrap more easily and create a prettier shape. Try to avoid the tougher stem parts.
Step 7
If your aged kimchi is saltier than usual, consider using only half a sheet of kimchi per roll or adjusting the amount of rice to achieve the perfect balance.
Step 8
Once the kimchi is rolled around the rice, wrap a slice of bacon around the entire roll. Overlap the bacon slightly to ensure it stays secure.
Step 9
It’s important to size the rice log appropriately so that the bacon can wrap around it snugly without too much overlap or gapping. Aim for a size that the bacon can encase evenly.
Step 10
To prevent the bacon from unraveling during cooking, secure the roll with toothpicks. Insert them horizontally and vertically through the bacon and the roll to keep everything in place.
Step 11
Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium heat. Place the bacon-wrapped kimchi rolls in the pan and cook, turning them frequently until the bacon is golden brown and crispy on all sides. Be mindful of potential splattering.
Step 12
Continue to roll and turn the kimchi and bacon rolls in the pan, ensuring the bacon cooks evenly and becomes nicely browned without burning. The rendered bacon fat will add a delicious flavor.
Step 13
Once cooked, remove the rolls from the pan, slice them into bite-sized pieces, and arrange them on a plate. Serve with a fresh salad or your favorite sauce for a delightful brunch experience!
