Delicious Kimchi Ham Rolls: A Quick and Flavorful Dish with Canned Ham!
Simple and Impressive Kimchi Ham Roll Recipe
With just one can of luncheon meat, you can quickly whip up this special gourmet dish! Enjoy a delightful meal right at home.
Ingredients- 1 can (approx. 340g) luncheon meat (e.g., Spam)
- 3 fresh eggs
- 3-4 sheets of roasted seaweed (gim)
- 2 bowls of cooked rice
- Generous amount of sesame oil
- Plenty of sesame seeds
- 1 bowl of kimchi
- 1/4 block of firm tofu
- 1 handful of mixed nuts
- 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
- A little perilla oil (deulgireum)
- A pinch of black pepper
- 1 Tbsp mirin (rice wine)
- 2 Tbsp oligo-syrup (or corn syrup)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, slice the canned luncheon meat into long, thin strips. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and stir-fry the ham strips until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. This enhances their savory flavor. Set the fried ham aside to cool slightly.
Step 2
Next, crack the 3 fresh eggs into a bowl and whisk them thoroughly until smooth. Pour the egg mixture into a lightly oiled frying pan and cook it like a thin omelet or crepe. Once cooked, let it cool and then slice it into long, thin strips, similar in size to the ham.
Step 3
Prepare the kimchi by squeezing out excess brine and chopping it finely. Crumble or mash the tofu after squeezing out its water. If using whole nuts, chop them into smaller pieces. In a clean pan, combine the chopped kimchi, mashed tofu, and chopped nuts. Add 1 Tbsp gochujang, a little perilla oil, a pinch of black pepper, 1 Tbsp mirin, and 2 Tbsp oligo-syrup. Stir-fry everything until well combined and the flavors meld together. Allow this mixture to cool completely before using.
Step 4
Place the 2 bowls of cooked rice into a large bowl. Drizzle in a generous amount of sesame oil and sprinkle with plenty of sesame seeds. Gently mix the rice using a spatula or spoon, being careful not to mash the grains, to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed. Lay a sheet of roasted seaweed (gim) on a bamboo sushi mat. Spread a thin, even layer of the seasoned rice over the seaweed, leaving a small border at the top edge. Arrange the sliced egg omelet and the fried ham strips generously over the rice. Carefully roll the seaweed and rice tightly using the bamboo mat, tucking in the filling as you go. Once rolled, slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces.
Step 5
Arrange the sliced kimchi ham rolls diagonally in a bento box or on a serving plate for an appealing presentation. Spoon the cooled kimchi, tofu, and nut mixture over the rolls as a topping. This adds color and an extra layer of flavor.
Step 6
While the kimchi ham rolls are delicious on their own, the addition of kimchi truly elevates them for the Korean palate! Using kimchi alone can make the rolls too salty, which is why we’ve incorporated tofu and nuts into the stir-fried topping; they balance the flavors beautifully. Each bite is a delightful burst of savory, sweet, and spicy notes. My husband absolutely loves this special roll! The combination of the mild egg, the savory and umami-rich ham, and the spicy stir-fried kimchi is fantastic. It’s easy to make and tastes wonderful, making it a great dish for any occasion or a convenient meal option. Highly recommended!
