Main Ingredients

  • Tteokbokki rice cakes 300g (If using tteokguk tteok, soak in lukewarm water beforehand)
  • Green onion 1/2 stalk (cut diagonally)
  • Onion 1/2 (sliced into strips)
  • Fish cakes 2 sheets (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • Water 3 cups (approx. 600ml)

Sweet & Spicy Soupy Tteokbokki Sauce

  • Gochugaru (Korean chili powder) 2 Tbsp
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 1 Tbsp
  • Sugar 1 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce 1 Tbsp
  • Minced garlic 1/2 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the additional ingredients for the tteokbokki. Peel the onion, wash it thoroughly, and slice it into strips about 0.5cm thick. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, similar in size to the rice cakes (about 2-3cm).

Step 1

Step 2

If you’re using tteokguk tteok, they might be hard, so soak them in cold water for about 10 minutes beforehand to soften them. If using regular tteokbokki rice cakes, simply rinse them under running water.

Step 2

Step 3

The key to delicious soupy tteokbokki is the sauce! In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, and 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic. Add 1 cup (approx. 200ml) of water and mix well with a spoon until smooth. Pre-mixing the sauce will result in a cleaner broth.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, it’s time to cook. Pour 2 cups (approx. 400ml) of water into a pot and add the pre-mixed sauce. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally to prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom. Once the broth is rapidly boiling, proceed to the next step.

Step 4

Step 5

When the broth is boiling, add the prepared fish cakes and sliced onions. Continue to boil vigorously over high heat. Cook until the onions become translucent and the fish cakes soften, which will add sweetness and umami to the broth.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the rice cakes, fish cakes, and onions are somewhat cooked, add the pre-soaked rice cakes and cook together. When the rice cakes become soft and the broth starts to thicken, add the diagonally sliced green onions and cook for just another 1-2 minutes. Your delicious soupy tteokbokki is ready! The fresh aroma of the green onions makes it even more delicious. Enjoy it piping hot!
