Delicious Stir-Fried Fish Cakes (Eomuk Bokkeum)
The Quintessential Korean Side Dish: Eomuk Bokkeum (Stir-Fried Fish Cakes) – A Family Favorite!
Introducing a magical Eomuk Bokkeum recipe that allows you to create a wonderful meal easily and quickly, even on busy days. It’s a true rice thief!
Main Ingredients- 2 packages (approx. 300g) of square fish cakes (eomuk)
- 1/2 medium onion
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the fish cakes. Open the package, rinse them briefly under running water to remove any impurities, and then cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 3-4 cm in length, using a knife or scissors. Cutting them thinly will help them absorb the sauce better and taste even more delicious.
Step 2
Next, let’s prepare the vegetables. Peel and wash the onion thoroughly. Then, slice it into thin strips, similar in length and thickness to the cut fish cakes. The sweetness of the onion will add wonderful flavor to the stir-fry.
Step 3
Now, let’s start stir-frying! Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a little cooking oil. Place the prepared fish cakes in the pan and stir gently with a spatula to prevent them from sticking together. Stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes until the fish cakes release their delicious aroma.
Step 4
Once the fish cakes begin to look slightly golden, add the sliced onion to the pan. Stir-fry them together until the onion becomes translucent and tender. Continue to stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes.
Step 5
After the vegetables are cooked, reduce the heat to low. It’s time to add the flavor! Pour 3-4 tablespoons of soy sauce along the edges of the pan. As the soy sauce sizzles on the hot pan and releases its fragrant aroma, quickly stir everything together to ensure the sauce is evenly distributed. Stir-fry for about 1 minute.
Step 6
Once the soy sauce has coated the fish cakes and onions well, add 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes for a touch of spice. Stir-fry to combine, ensuring the flakes don’t clump together. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until you get a slightly roasted aroma from the chili flakes, which adds even more deliciousness.
Step 7
Finally, add the corn syrup to give it sweetness and a beautiful glaze. I used about 2 tablespoons, but you can add 2-3 generous drizzles, depending on your preference. Stir well to combine with all the ingredients. Continue to stir-fry for another minute until everything is glossy and well-coated. This is the finishing touch!
Step 8
Your delicious Eomuk Bokkeum is ready! This quintessential Korean side dish is perfect served over warm rice or as a side for your bento box. Enjoy your meal! ^^
