Main Ingredients- 2 slices of bread
- 2 frankfurter sausages
- 1 egg
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 handfuls mozzarella cheese (approx. 40-50g)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, score the frankfurter sausages lightly with a knife. Scoring helps them cook evenly and taste better. Gently pan-fry them without oil until lightly browned on both sides. This prevents the sausages from bursting and enhances their flavor. You can also insert them into skewers without pre-cooking, but a light sear makes them tastier. (Tip: Feel free to use thicker sausages if you prefer!)
Step 2
Trim the crusts off the bread slices. Then, microwave them for about 20 seconds. This will soften the bread, making it easier to roll without tearing.
Step 3
Using a rolling pin or the top of a cup, flatten the softened bread slices as much as possible. Rolling them thin is key to achieving a neat hot dog shape later. Roll from both sides of the bread for best results.
Step 4
On one flattened bread slice, place a slice of cheddar cheese, followed by a generous handful of mozzarella cheese.
Step 5
Now, place the pre-cooked sausage on top of the cheese. Starting from one edge, tightly roll up the bread around the sausage. Press firmly as you roll to ensure the sausage stays in place. You can lightly dampen the final edge of the bread with water to help seal it securely.
Step 6
In a bowl, whisk the egg to create an egg wash. Dip the rolled bread hot dogs into the egg wash, coating them evenly on all sides. This helps the breadcrumbs adhere well.
Step 7
Roll the egg-washed hot dogs in the breadcrumbs, ensuring they are fully coated. This step is crucial for achieving a crispy exterior.
Step 8
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over low heat. Carefully place the hot dogs in the pan and cook them slowly, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and the cheese inside is fully melted. It’s important to maintain low heat to prevent burning.
Step 9
(Optional) Sprinkle with sugar while still warm for a delightful sweet touch. Kids will especially love this! (Tip: Powdered sugar also works well.)
Step 10
(Optional) For an enhanced flavor experience, serve with your favorite mustard or ketchup. Enjoy your delicious hot dog!
