Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Peel the onion, wash it thoroughly, trim off the root end, and thinly slice it into julienne strips. These julienned onions will form the base of the flavorful sauce for your steak rice bowl.
Step 2
In a pan or pot with some depth, combine 1 small cup of Tsuyu, 1 small cup of Mirin, and 1 small cup of water. Add the julienned onions to this mixture. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook until the onions are softened and the sauce has slightly thickened. Be careful not to reduce it too much; you want a bit of sauce left to mix with the rice. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes.
Step 3
Pat the beef dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture. Cut the beef into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm. Season the beef pieces evenly with black pepper and salt. This step is crucial for enhancing the flavor and removing any potential gamey taste.
Step 4
Heat a pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of olive oil. Once the oil is warm, carefully place the seasoned beef slices into the pan.
Step 5
Sear the beef on each side until nicely browned and cooked to your liking. For an extra rich flavor, add a knob of butter to the pan as the beef cooks and let it melt. Cook to your desired doneness; medium-rare to medium is generally recommended for rice bowls.
Step 6
In a separate pan, heat a little oil. Add the bean sprouts (rinsed and drained well) and stir-fry them quickly over high heat to keep them crisp. Add 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce and stir-fry briefly to combine. This will give the bean sprouts a delicious umami flavor while maintaining their crunch.
Step 7
Wash the green onions and thinly slice them. These will be used as a garnish for your rice bowl, adding a fresh aroma and vibrant color.
Step 8
Spoon the warm cooked rice into your serving bowl.
Step 9
Generously spoon the onion sauce made in step 1 over the warm rice. Ensure the sauce is distributed well so it coats the rice.
Step 10
Arrange the crisp stir-fried bean sprouts on top of the sauce, followed by the seared beef steak. Finally, garnish with the sliced green onions and a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds. Your delicious Tsuyu Beef Steak Rice Bowl is now complete! For an extra kick, add a small dollop of wasabi on the side.
