Ingredients
  • 1 bowl of cooked rice
  • Leftover Korean holiday vegetable side dishes (namul)
  • Lettuce
  • 1 slice of cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 sheet of kimbap seaweed

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare all your ingredients before you begin cooking. Having everything ready beforehand will make the cooking process much smoother.

Step 2

Wash the lettuce thoroughly under running water. Soaking it briefly in water with a little vinegar and then rinsing multiple times will make it extra crisp. Make sure to drain excess water. For the egg, you can prepare it as a fried egg or, if you prefer, make a thin omelet. Feel free to select and add ingredients according to your preference to create your own unique folded kimbap!

Step 3

Lightly stir-fry any leftover Korean holiday vegetable side dishes (namul) in a pan. Stir-frying them makes them softer and removes excess moisture, enhancing their flavor. Fold the kimbap seaweed sheet into four equal sections using kitchen scissors. Then, make a single long cut along one side of the seaweed where indicated by the red mark. This helps the seaweed fold neatly without tearing.

Step 4

Unfold the cut kimbap seaweed sheet. Layer about one bowl of cooked rice, a slice of cheese, the prepared fried egg (or omelet), and the stir-fried namul onto the seaweed. Be careful not to overfill, as too many ingredients can cause the seaweed to tear or make it difficult to eat. Fold the seaweed according to the indicated arrow sequence. You can also add ingredients like Spam ham, often included in gift sets, for an even richer flavor.

Step 5

To ensure the kimbap holds its shape, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap. Once the shape is somewhat set, use a sharp knife to cut it in half for easy eating. This folded method is significantly easier than rolling traditional kimbap, and it’s a great dish for children to make themselves, making it enjoyable for the whole family.

Step 6

Here’s how to easily make folded kimbap! It’s surprisingly simple to prepare, yet it makes a satisfying meal. This recipe is also great for using up leftover ingredients from the refrigerator and serves as an excellent snack for kids. If you’re looking for a new way to enjoy kimbap, especially using up holiday leftovers, give this recipe a try. The combination of cheese and namul is a surprisingly delightful ‘honey combination’!
