Main Ingredients
  • 2 sheets Freeze-dried seaweed (Maesaengi)
  • 1 handful Fresh oysters
  • 10 Tbsp Warm water
  • 3 Tbsp Pancake mix (Buchim garu)
  • 1 Egg
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Pinch of Black pepper
  • Pinch of Pancake mix (for coating oysters)
  • Vegetable oil for frying, as needed

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the freeze-dried seaweed. Since it’s already washed and cut, you don’t need to rinse or chop it. Pour 10 tablespoons of warm water over the 2 sheets of freeze-dried seaweed. Gently stir with a spoon until it softens and loosens up. Ensure there are no clumps and mix thoroughly.

Step 2

Next, get your fresh oysters ready. To remove any fishy smell, gently wash them in clean water or saltwater.

Step 3

Add 3 tablespoons of pancake mix, 1 egg, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of black pepper to the seaweed mixture. Mix everything well. The freeze-dried seaweed is already cut, so you can add it directly to the batter. Stir until all ingredients are evenly combined.

Step 4

Drain the washed oysters thoroughly using a sieve. It’s crucial to remove as much moisture as possible from the oysters; otherwise, the pancake mix won’t adhere well, and oil might splatter during frying. Pat them dry with a paper towel if needed.

Step 5

Lightly coat one side of each drained oyster with a pinch of pancake mix. Coating just one side helps maintain a nice shape and texture when frying. Thoroughly drying the oysters is the key to this step.

Step 6

Now, heat a pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of vegetable oil. Drop spoonfuls of the seaweed batter onto the hot pan, spreading them thinly. Once the edges of the seaweed pancake start to set, carefully place the coated oyster onto the batter. Then, gently flip the pancake to cook the oyster until it’s golden brown and cooked through. Flip it again to ensure both sides are nicely browned and crispy. Enjoy your delicious seaweed and oyster pancake!
